  • Look what else I found...

I came SO CLOSE to sticking my hand down for some blackberries...was stepping forward...suddenly something registered as "not right."

I took this pic then called my husband, who came a'runnin' with the shovel, which really needs sharpening...

Sorry folks, yes, we killed it...it does not belong by my back porch.

Pete, it was a big fat ugly scary snake, that's what kind it was!! But I am trying to find it on the Snakes of Texas site - it did not have a rattle, but it's pattern looked like a rattle snake. It had fangs which it kept biting through the air with as my husband cut it's head of...nearly off...such a dull shovel!!

          Yellowish on the underside...

Karen, that's weird - oh I see, it goes to my album...I guess you have to click 'next' until you get to the horrible ugly thing.

Okay, according to the pics at this site -

              http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/kids/wil...e/snakes.phtml

It was most likely a Cottonmouth. Well just great. WHY, for gosh sakes. It has no need to be here. I'm now scared to go outside!!! Thank God my husband was here. If I had left it to get a shovel, it would have gone under the porch most likely...and we wouldn't have been able to find it. Now I'm scared for the grands to come out. Well, we'll just have to stay inside if they do.

You know, yesterday the dogs were all worked up, barking at something on the ground. I went to look and saw nothing and they had stopped by then, of course. I wonder if it was this snake? Also, the night before last the chickens were having fits in the hen house...I went out - yes, in the dark ...won't be doing that for a while... and saw no raccoons or possums...didn't look for snakes....how dumb was that!

Okay, the various sites show the belly of a cottonmouth as being white-ish. This was yellowish.

I hope to heavens it wasn't a nice little hog nose. I have only encountered one other, YEARS ago...my husband was not here so I called a neighbor...I thought it was a cobra!! It was flared out and striking at the dog, who was barking and jumping around....but hog noses are not venomous and they eat toads, of which we have hundreds....

But a hog nose would not have been baring fangs....

              I am so unnerved....

Whiteish can be varied and get towards creamish or yellowish I'm sure! Just think though it could have helped keep the rat and mouse population down! Are you near lots of water then as that site says they rarely stray far from water.

There's a creek about 600 feet west of us. And the property out back has a cattle tank - a big pond that is mostly rainwater but they do pump water into it from their well, which is not nice.

It does look quite fat. Did it take a long time to kill?
