On the bbc right now the presenters are talking about the fact you can get hold of the mortgage agreement on any property on the land registery site for £3..

The agreement include all the bank info and your sig!

    What do you think ?

Would you believe that I am watching Cbeebies and not intellectual tv! That is a bit scary though isn't it - especially for as little as £3

I'm outraged but, strangely, not surprised. It's amazing how much info you can get from 192.com (if you know how) i.e. ex-directory phone numbers & the amounts that people paid for their houses - these are just the things that I've been shown , so, there may be more.

You should be able to see what people paid for a house imho.. So many house on the market at prices 25% higher than the value which makes a mess of things when looking at houses..

The sig is the odd thing...

The price I paid for my house is between me and the vendor, the directory doesn't say what state the house was in, or whether it was part-exchange etc. etc. (I paid less for my house because it needed a new kitchen, bathroom, windows etc) plus it's out of date, so, the numbers don't mean that much. You can get an overview of current property prices from estate agents, or, property pages in your local paper, or, on the web. At the end of the day, a property is worth what someone is willing to pay for it & 'overpriced' houses (in this area, anyway) tend to remain unsold.
Just a final thought, on the other hand, maybe the value of all our purchases should be in the public domain, so we don't overpay on insurance, dental treatment, holidays......

Surely this info breeches some kind of data protection act. Really sounds odd to me.

I agree however for someone like me (looking to buy 1st home) its one of the most useful things in the world... I'm of course not interested in who it is but the price...

Back by my parents I've seen a house go on the market once a year over the summer every year at 100,000's over its "value" just incase someone buys it.. Now if your a home owner then this may be good for you as this sort of advertising increases the price of your home but effects us first time buyers the most...

The ceiling price of a street in a town imho is important...

I do take your point, however, there have to be boundaries regarding what is considered appropriate/in the public interest & I believe that we have a right not least to be informed about the information that can be made public but, also, we have a right to be made a part of that decision making process. I am also aware of individuals that have had information (re the purchase price of their house) used against them. So maybe it would be better to list mean, median & mode of property prices in a given area/street. That way you are less likely to compromise individual privacy. Good luck with your house hunting, we're in the process of buying a new house, so it's all very exciting/nerve racking at the moment!

What really annoys me is that the good old BBC have just advertised that fact to every crook in the land.

                          Thanks a bunch
