  • The 'Whois' registery?

I'm registering a new domain name and there is an option to opt out of the 'whois' registery. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any dis/advantages of using this register before I choose?

Really the 'up' and 'down' sides are the same - you will be on a public register.

If you pick a domain name of your choice and go to a whois tool, you can see various information about the registrar and registrant. Here's an example: http://whois.domaintools.com/mattchedit.com

I've never opted out (but then buy most of 'em for business purposes), and never had any problems - however some people try to get around this by putting in fake information - which technically can make your registration invalid - so don't go with that!!

It won't do you any harm to opt out - in theory if you are 'opted in' these details are public. Your call.

A downside I can see by opting out is that people may wonder why and whether you've got something to hide - which for a business isn't ideal. We'll often use whois if we're buying from a new website - maybe it's just a psychological thing but the more info I have about a site the happier I am using them

Yes, I can see the reasoning behind that too.

That's an interesting link Matt. I went and checked out my sites and whilst my name is showing further details are not. I went and logged into Easily but can't see how I can make my contact visible - or do I need to do that with my host ?
