  • Stinky Dog !

Wondering if anyone can help. My whole family are cat people. We have always had cats though we love all animals.

A few days ago, my mum bought a beautiful little Shih Tzu puppy. Shes 9wks old and her name is Molly. Shes just great but we find her a bit pongy. I didnt think puppies would have a doggy smell ! And her toys are stinky too and she's only been playing with them for a couple of days!

Any suggestions for a fresh smelling dog? Doggy talc, spray, nose peg?

Go fo the nose peg? I just tosh my two in the shower when they get smelly... and Febreeze sometimes helps with the bedding - but hang it outside after you spray it!

    Good luck!

I wouldn't worry puppies do tend to have a specific aroma to them - as they grow they tend to get less smelly - unless they are like my 2 and love to find fox poo to roll in!

Our dog is 13.5 years and still smells of digestive biscuits, don't ask me why but he has always smelt of these. I have never known a puppy to smell may be worth having her checked at the vet could be a skin problem, our previous retriever had recurring ezcema and this can make them pong a bit. So for the puppies sake get the vet to check her out, if it is skin related it can make them miserable but can be sorted quite easily.

Believe it or not you can get doggy deoderents and mouth spray! I also use Febreze between their baths or potpourri, candles or one of those Bubble sphere things that look like a goldfish bowl. Maybe a quick bath with a mild baby or puppy shampoo could freshen her up a bit?

I have a cat who would argue with that! She waits until the alarm clock goes off and then goes to the litter...................must have held it in all night!

we give our dogs Vetzyme Conditioning Tablets every day. It cuts down the doggy smell and conditions their coats beautifully. That and wash their toys and bedding regularly and febreze in between washing

Mine are the opposite, they go out all day, come in during the evening and then wait until we are all in bed, then they go to the tray, one after the other! Very "fragrant" indeed!!!!

Velvet coat spray, or could it be an anal gland problem, though I think thats on older dogs

As Shih Tzu's have short flat faces (like my Persians) it may be due to tears from their eyes. The breeding process shortens the tear ducts and sometimes these get twisted causing runny eyes. These tears get in the fur and a wet environment makes bacteria which pongs. I use Eye Envy, this is a daily process and my cats hate it but it does help. HTH
