    Congratulations

Be very complimentary , say how much you have enjoyed your time with the company and how much you feel you have learned but you feel it is time to move on and gain different experiences that your new job can offer.
Even if your old job wasn't that great always better to leave on a good note.

Thanks, it's sort of awkward as my current employer is a family friend.
I think I sort of have my head around the basics of what goes into it, but I am hopeless at starting letters, and then what do I do? do I mention it and give her the letter, or do I give it to her and hide?
        Eeek!

No don't hide, be upfront a say that while you have enjoyed your time with her you feel it is now time to move on and expand your skills. A good employer will be pleased for you, more so if she is a family friend.

            Start the letter

"It is with regret that.............." then when you actually said that you're leaving you can put all the nice things about how much you've learned and how you've enjoyed your time there etc.

And don't forget to wish them continued prosperity with their business (or something like that).

Cripes I feel bad now, my letters of resignation have always been very short and sweet - stating it's a letter of resignation and when my last working day will be. Then again most of my jobs have been for county councils so my bosses were robots anyway

This is what I have come up with so far, can anyone suggest anything else, or any changes?

'Please accept this letter as my notice of resignation from .......... , this will be effective as of the 18th of November 2008.
Thank you for the opportunity to work at ........ .I have learned a lot during my time here, and gained plenty of experience. I truly appreciate your guidance and friendship during my time employed.'

                  Thanks

Well done on your new job Louise.

I once had a very nice resignation letter given to me, and it was ended by wishing me and the company well in the future - which I thought was a nice touch !

Anyway, good luck as your life ventures down a new path.
                    With love,

Louise88 your letter sounds good, well done on your new job.

The resignation letter for my last job had to be made more tactful due to the original resignation letter being written by me when I wasnt in a particularly good mood with the company I was leaving.

What new job are you doing?

Good luck with the new job louise, be kind and gracious to the people you are leaving let them know how sad you are to go but you feel the time is right...tell them just how wonderful they were! They will never forget that and it will soften the blow for them, they will be sad that your leaving no doubt but they will wish you luck.
