  • American friends on Etsy

I'm still pretty much Etsy clueless for the time being but just had a thought spring from Anne's thread

Am I right in thinking the biggest Etsy market are American?

To get noticed, would it be worth considering making some americana-type targetted products to catch our overseas buddies eyes?

Or do you think that might work against you somehow? It might definitely depend on wording it very carefully

I was just wondering if, when my Etsy time comes, it might be nice to make a special american-themed sample to say hi and introduce myself?

I get your thinking but I also think that our American friends would perhaps appreciate the opportunity to buy Britsh? I think it would be a pity to change what you do in order to produce something that they can already get "back home".

Yeah I see what you mean Janet - I watch tons of Frasier and he calls himself an anglophile!

I guess I was thinking of times like Thanksgiving too, for UK fairs it'd never occur to me to make any Thanksgiving items but I thought it might be worth clueing up on what to put in any if I did make some and wondered if anyone else ever did the odd USA focussed items

Hi Sue - I'd never heard of it before I found the forum so dont worry! - have a look around here http://www.etsy.com/index.php

Its an online shop where crafters can buy & sell their lovely stuff. I'm not on it just yet, need to do lots of sample packaging & weighing and get my head around the postage costs yet - but lots of forum guys have shops on here and, if you have a read through the various Etsy posts (you could search for Etsy using the search button), it seems to be one of the better ones to try out

My sister-in-law to be has just come over from the US and the impression I got from her was that they "just love the whole handmade thing"! I think that generally speaking the US population is made up of people with a diverse range of tastes just as we are here in the UK and that there is no one thing or style that they really go for the same as us!
I think the main problem with the Etsy audience being mainly US are the shipping issues, but this depends a lot on what you sell and what rules and regs may or may not apply to the export of those items.

I don't sell on Etsy but I agree with Nat, Etsy attracts a very diverse tastes with handmade being the one thing in common.
