  • Totally Random Idea....

Ok, before i start, i will admit that the idea has just popped into my head and i haven't given to much thought to the logistics etc...

I have read so many posts on how and where to promote selling everyones gorgeous designs, the pros, cons, costs etc

There are so many talented people on here with different qualities from web design to marketing, from seo experts to business gurus could we not all pool together and come up with something ourselves that we have control of, that suits everyones needs and doesnt cost the earth??

I am sure if enough people got behind it and promoted it we could make it a success. There are many different options available from free auction scripts/software (our own craft ebay?) to shop software to links software etc etc...

I hope i won't upset anyone or break any rules by posting this as this is not the intention, Like i said, it's a totally random idea but i would be interested to read peoples thoughts!

Sounds like a good idea with potential, I'd be interested in joining, although I wouldn't really know where to start! I'm definitely not a business guru

I think this is a wonderful idea...and I don't know why nobody has thought of it before (or maybe they have!)....

I've often thought I'd like to set up somewhere like that but my web skills are limited in what I can and can't do...

Well done for thinking of it

This sounds like a good idea I had thought sometime about producing a showcase for other websites, involving advertising etc, there is a site in the US which does just that, have not joined as would have preferred a UK based site. They advertise in a lot of the larger US magazines and have several entrance fees depending on what package you go with.

One problem this is run by a web designer and that I am not! If anyone would like to take a look check out my blog for details.

Sorry I am being a bit thick today, do you mean showcasing our websites or as an alternative to say Folksy or Misi?

Why don't you chat to Mr.M. He has a wealth of experience in the advertising, he has his fingers in a lot of pies and he could well come up with something and maybe, for a small remuneration, organise it too. Just a thought. Perhaps it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Who is Mr. M? do you mean the owner of this forum?? If so the thought had been running through my mind too...

Yes. You can PM him privately. The worst he can say is "No".

Wow!! I thought everyone would tell me it was an insane idea!!

I would take alot of work, and would be a enormous task for just 1 person. I was thinking if we could get together a small group of people (4 or so?) willing to contribute their time to do the "heavy Lifting" so to speak and the input and help of others interested and willing to donate just some of their time then we could really come up with something....

I think the first thing is to establish who would, if anyone be willing to give up some of their time to help with the main setting up, i don't think it just have to be technical but people who just want to be involved. I would be willing to put my hand up.

The second thing would be for everyone to put ideas of what they want forward whether it be something like a craft gumtree or ebay or something else (carolee crafts i can't see which site you are talking about from your blog?) and take it from there.

The main thing that popped into my mind would be that the biggest bugbear seems to be listing fees so maybe whatever we come up with would have to be free to list....but there would be costs involved so could we get a sponor??

This is just me rambling out loud so please feel free to correct me or shut me up!!!

I would think that the absolutely simplest way to do it would be to have a sort of mini website which is divided into sections - like a proper website - but that provides, perhaps just one picture and description for each crafter and a link to their Misi; Etsy; Ebay or website (or other)....

If everyone kicked in £1 or £2 per month (or something low like that) it wouldn't cost anyone too much money but some of the money could be used for advertising - for instance on the crafts forum or other such places...

It wouldn't be a place to purchase items exactly, but it would be a showcase for a variety of different craft related items...

certainly willing to help, i have some rather limited experience of setting up sites but happy to contribute. Sponsors are a great idea-maybe UK/English/Welsh/Irish/Scottish enterprise type people would be the kind we should look for ? rather than a commercial sponsor.

If it goes ahead it would be great to have some a4 posters made up and published on a pdf and we can all print them out and put them up at our local schools, work, clubs, notice boards around town. Im sure between us we cover most of the country and advertising is the most important thing.
