  • Do you...

...send out emails to customers about new items on your site?

Ive just sent a short email to my 2 customers saying there are new items added.I felt really cheeky but thought why not.

What do you do?Send emails, leaflets in the post etc?

I dont have a website, but speaking as a customer of many sites I dont think that's cheeky at all.

I think it's nice because you get to see lots of lovely new bits, I always feel cheated if I return to a site and there are new things that are now out of stock or unavailable and I didnt know about them.

I only think it's cheeky if they get sent out like every other day because it just clogs up your inbox, if I had a site still I would definitely send out alerts.

I do a mailer once or twice a year, email to those I know the email address of, and post to those that I don't. Just a short note, with a couple of small pictures of new stuff, and what will be happening in the coming months. The one I did this time last year also include last posting dates for Christmas, which did get me a couple of early orders.

I often wonder about doing this. I don't think its cheeky, but personally speaking I think things have more impact if they come through the post. I know it costs the price of stamps, but I bought a piece of metalwork a year ago and every six months the maker sends me a leaflet with new designs on, news and a little piece about her allotment!! I read that as it only short and makes a change to the usual bills and rubbish that comes through the post. I might do that with some of my customers.

I would say that it is ok to email every month but include a line in there saying if you'd prefer not to hear from us in the future then please email STOP by reply.
Also mention that you never pass on email details to other parties.

It is a great way to increase traffic to your site.

Hmmm - I might think about that too. I like the idea of post as I use my own envelopes so more advertising for me!

                      I add that bit too.

I've only ever had one removal request and it really annoyed me, not because she asked to be removed, but because she works with my OH and moaned at him for months that she never got the last mailing I did. I'm sure she just asked to be removed for spite!!!

When I release a new CD I send out an email to all my previous customers with details. The last one went fantastic..I had my first sale 20 mins after the email went out!! I'm lucky I have brilliant customers!
I totally agree that they shouldn't be sent out every other day though. I get emails from a certain craft website practically every day with some new special offer..to the point I have unsubscribed because it was annoying me! Made me wonder when they ever had anything that was full price?!

Bear in mind that if you are keeping a record of customer details for promotional purposes, then you may need to be registered under the data protection act.

You must give them the chance to remove their details, and when providing them, you need to explain clearly what they are going to be used for. If they are sending you an email, then you need their permission to add them to a mailing list. This applies to postal as well as electronic communications.
It's never too late to gyrate!
