  • How much info???

OK I hope this isn't too daft a question.
As some of you will know we have just set up our online shop.
How much personnal information do you make available to visitors and potential buyers.
Name ,address,tel..... Obviously we want our customers to be able to trust us, so do we make this information available. Then say you go on holiday????? Isn't this information an advertisement that your business/home address is empty. Or am i just being paranoid.
Would love to hear your opinions

I had the same reservations as you when I set up my site. My address is in my stationary, but not on my site. Feel free to have a look at the contact section of my site to see my solution.

    Hope this helps

There was a thread about this a while back - I'll try and look it up but I'm sure that you have to put your company address/registered address onto your website. Natty Netty (I think) knows more!

I can't post links yet but I copied this snippet from the business link website

Displaying a sole trader or partnership business name

Your business name, your own name, or the partners' names and business address must be clearly displayed:
        • wherever you run your business and deal with customers or suppliers
        • on all business letters, orders, payments, invoices, receipts and other business documents
        Displaying a name online

If you are an online business, you must display:
        • general information about your business - including business name, address, email address, VAT registration number (if applicable)
        • details of any relevant professional body that you belong to or any authorisation scheme to which your service is subject

I personally don't have my address on my website, but I do have both my home and mobile numbers complete with my email address.

The main reason for this is that as I run a mobile business, I often put where I am at specific times so that people can come along and have a go. I wouldn't want someone using this information for less than legal purposes.

Yup as far as I understand it is now law (as of 1st Jan 2007) that you must have an address, phone number and email address on your website - a contact form isn't sufficient apparently.

We 'hide' our details in the terms & conditions section of our site rather than the contact us section - that way the info is there but not too obvious. As for when you go on your hols, I always stress about that one too but you can get around it with something like 'due to staff shortages' or 'stock taking this week'.

I suppose the only thing is that most people wont know if your address is a home address or a business address only people very local to the area - but still the law says you must provide business address etc!!

              All the best.

Hmmm I had realised this for my employers business as it is a limited company but hadn't realised it would apply to little 'ol me!! I just have my location and mobile number on my website, with so much online fraud etc I hate the thougt of having to display my full address, will have a look and see where I can hide it on there wihout being too obvious!!

If you own a site then I can find your address stright away..

An address and phone number on your site is nothing to worry about because think of all the people in the phone book!

In regards to hol's and someone coming to rob you I think that the chance would be some slim.. Someone would really have to have it in for you to do that..

I wasnt happy putting my address on my site, had to check that parents are ok with it and they said 'well, were in the phone book ...'.
But I suppose its needed on there to receive cheques.

Under my address I wrote 'Please note this is a private residence'..
I hate the idea of people turing up, thinking its a shop.

I would maybe change the Private Residence to something like as we have no store front facilities please call for an appointment. That seems to work for me. They don't know if it is private house, unit, workshop whatever.

                      cheers.

                              Thanks everyone.
As the work shop will still be use while im away anyway I suppose ive got nothing to worry about.

Would rather have the contents of the house removed then me tools! lol. Thats not an invite!!!!!!!
Will just have to tell amanda that she needs to spend day and night in there. PMSL and if she can manage it make us millionaires while she's at it.
Im sure I will get a very polite answer to that one. Not!!!!
