  • Selection of Courier Prices

With the recent price increases and discussion of using couriers, I thought I'd share the info I've found about certain couriers' prices. I had researched couriers that seemed to have a good overall reputation, from the reviews found online. These charges are including VAT and are based on posting from England. Ipostparcels charges extra for a signature on delivery. I'm not sure if the other couriers do the same or if a signature is included. These are just my own personal findings. There will be more couriers around that I haven't looked into myself.

*Yes, it really is more expensive to send a 2kg parcel rather than a 5kg parcel.

Did you exclude collect plus for any reason? Their parcels start at £4. You have to drop it off at the nearest shop operating this service though.

I didn't include Collect + because the nearest store to me that does it is a 40 minute round trip away and the Collect + parcels are delivered by Yodel, (formerly HDNL), a courier with possibly the worst reviews on the internet.

Thanks for that Stephen very useful, have to admit I hadn't heard of some of those companies. If anyone else wants to chip in with similar info for other couriers then either myself or one of the other mods will collate it all in one post and pin it as a sticky.

Ouch! I didn't know that, I'm glad I asked. We have had problems in the past with HDNL leaving our parcels pushed through the fence or on the wall because they can't be bothered to walk down our drive. Our drive is long but not that long. Lots of people walk past our house on the way through the village so you can see thats not a good idea. Oddly enough we have been using collect plus to send low value itmes (junk) we sold on ebay. We haven't had a problem (yet) but I will bear your comments in mind. Thanks for sharing.

One of my 'day job' colleagues has a partner who having been made redundant has just bought a franchise with one of the major couriers as they are expanding rapidly on the back of Royal Mail's recent decision. He gets paid 60p per parcel delivered irrespective of size and his van costs him £180 per week from his delivery income. Doesn't excuse 'dumping' a parcel but one can understand why the deliverers don't want to call back and will try and leave a parcel anywhere they can.

All those prices seem quite high - I use Parcel2Go and the smallest parcel costs just £3 to send inside the UK if you use the Hermes option.

I don't send but I do receive from abroad. UPS bring my hobby supplies from Germany. You can follow their journey on line from collection, various depots (including time in and out) and the date for delivery. I'm a difficult address to find as some bright spark gave the whole road, half the village, the same post code. To add to the confusion a lot of the houses have names not numbers. UPS have never let me down.

I also send my business parcels via UPS as they will collect from me the same day and deliver the next day. I can book via parcel2go so I can compare other options. I often send to odd addresses as they are usually large industrial sites where the postcode might lead you to the back of the site where the entrance has been closed for years. It may be quite a long way via several roads to get to the entrance to the sites but UPS have always delivered and there has never been any damage to any of the cardboard packaging.

Forgot to mention that I only send business parcels within the UK.

Has UPS improved their customs proceedures because when I last used them a couple of years ago they were hopeless, both into and out of the UK

I have no idea, sorry. I just order and my goods arrive.

If you're ordering within the EU there are no customs dues to pay (hurrah) but most of my imports are non-eu and UPS seemed to explode and get the wrong tariff even when the correct one is marked on the package (always higher of course and taking over a week to process).
For non EU imports I always plump for DHL which is incredibly fast both with the shipping and customs
