    Chinese take out boxes
, or Chinese boxes, were first known as oyster pails. At a time when fresh oysters were relatively unexpressive, shucked oysters were placed in these boxes for sanitary and easy travel. As the price of fresh oysters increased, a surplus of Chinese take out boxes occurred. By World War II, an increase in the popularity of pre prepared foods led to the widespread use of Chinese take out boxes as a form of food transportation. Eventually Chinese take out became synonymous with these small cardboard boxes.
