  • Phoenix Cards at craft fair?

What do you guys think? Have been approached by Phoenix to have a stall at our Easter Sunday Fair. While I have nothing against Phoenix, I think they do really nice stuff for kids, I have advertised it as being for hand made crafters only. Am in a bit of a dilemma now, should I let her in as their stuff is UK made and illustrated, or should I stick with my hand made only? Advise please!!

If you've advertised it as being for hand made crafters only I really think you should turn her down especially if you have any other card-makers attending.

Probably best I don't give my opinion on Phoenix Cards attending craft fairs but I do know many other crafters would share that opinion

I think if you've stated that it's handmade then I don't think Phoenix should be there. But only as you had said handmade...I too like Phonenix cards...but they are mass produced! That's what I think anyway!

There's a linked thread underneath this post that debates whether they are handmade too

Much to everyone's annoyance, inc other cardmakers, a lot of organisers let 'em in.
So p'raps if you can't fill your event that may be what you have to do. Obviously in an ideal world you'd ban 'em.
Funnily enough, Phoenix have asked me to supply a few images. But I declined.

The final choice is, of course, yours, but if I went to a craft fair which was advertised as hand crafted goods only, I would be very disappointed to see Phoenix Cards there, simply because they are mass produced and sold by agents. However, that is the opinion of someone who has dabbled in many crafts (including card making) over the years - many non-craft people may not be able to tell the difference.

On the other hand, if you have empty spaces at your craft fair it is certainly financially and probably visually better to have those stalls occupied by something which is of reasonable quality and which visitors to the fair are likely to buy even if the goods are not as individual as the truly hand crafted items.

Fence, what fence? Oh! The one I'm sitting on - oops!

Comment seconded... agree that they are not handmade therefor shouldn't be allowed at a handmade only event but other than that I will refrain from commenting

I agree not hand made classed as third party selling, we have not allowed them at our event as handmade by the seller only. Had Magdalene jewllery approach for a stall dispite all the adverts saying handmade etc. they were quite miffed about the fact they could not have a stall and did not understand what the problem was, Eh!!

                  Turf wars!
The queerest do was one we were at and there were TWO Phoenix card traders. One of 'em was right in the entrance meeting 'n' greeting with a cheery smile, the other was in the depths of the hall wearing a sour face. ' Course the Phoenix trader with the sour face sold nowt and complained to the organiser. Which got her nowhere. Likewise the woman who complained at another do we attended in Gillingham, Kent where there were FIFTEEN assorted cardmakers (at least one of 'em Phoenix) all competing in a v small venue. Needless to say the organiser gave her her money back and simply banned her from any more of their events.

                    I'd politely tell them no.

By the way, why is someone posting pics of themselves in their comments???!!!

Think he's just discovered this can be done by posting in a blog and transferring. All to add a bit of life to his posts, I s'pose!

I'm with the majority too Helen, you have advertised a handmade only event and therefore should stick to that. If I had booked an event that said handmade and I found bought in product there I would complain and want a refund at the very least.

No, it's his wife-beater, as they're known these days. And yes, he's wearing Chapstick.
