I don't make cards myself but if you are planning on doing a few fairs etc it really is worth investing in some display stands. It makes your stall look more professional and allows customers to browse your products easily.
Where have you looked for stands? I'm sure some helpful people will have ideas about the best value stands around. I use kaleidoscope supplies (http://www.kaleidoscope-supplies.co.uk/) for all of mine and i think they do card stands too. They are reasonable and their delivery is speedy!!
Maybe some card makers might have ideas about home made stands too, but i can't help you there i'm afraid.........
