Wow, it's nice to hear some common sense talk about websites... I speak with lots of people using Facebook and it seems that some people think theses free website builder services will solve all their needs in relation to selling online.

Wordpress(FREE) + Woocomerce(FREE) + Free Template from woocomerce or maybe a nice paid template. There are lots of tutorials on youtube how to open a woocomerce shop. You have to pay only for your domain and hosting.

Having a website certainly can get very expensive. I would definitely suggest using a content management system, something easy to start with like Shopify or Woocommerce but, you will need the help of a developer and as you get bigger you will want to move onto a more robust content management system which is costly.

Wix is pretty good as is squarespace if you want a little outlay, but to be honest I think the best way to go is wordpress then moving to Shopify if you add mroe products. We had Magento sold to us and it turned out to be a nightmare, Shopify is so much better.

You can create your own website or add products on external resources for selling. There are many options available for customers, so choose resource which one suits you.

I agree that selling platforms such as Etsy are an excellent way to start out your online venture and maybe consider building your own website once things start taking off.

It took a few months for Etsy sales to pick up when I first started but having a large number of products would help with that (the more listings you have the more likely you are to appear in their search results).

My website in comparison has been very slow to attract new customers. It takes time (and a good understanding of SEO and other online analytical tools as others have said) to show in google searches so initially you will probably need to do all the promotion yourself i.e. business cards, flyers, social media etc.

Yes, this thread is old, but it is still useful! Nowadays there are many people who are looking for a way to build a website. And I'm no exception. Recently I've found out about the modern projects that suggest a new approach in web design. They seem to be pretty simple, but I'm sure they will become popular and attract a big audience soon. In my opinion, such projects are worth trying. Hopefully, someone will find this information to be interesting!

Of course, it is possible to hire a professional and have a great site. But what to do if you are on a budget? The only way-out is to create a site by yourself. Modern web design tools allow doing this as they offer beautifully designed templates and great features. And they are easy-to-use. I chose one of the website builders and I haven't regretted that decision. After all, I saved money and built the website. I achieved my goal.
