Before christmas i tried to make a soap scrub bar, and i used pumice. But i didnt like the way it turned out as it all went to the bottom which is fair enough but it had also turned black.

I was on ancient wisdom last night and i was looking at some of there soaps. i noticed that the soap cakes they do have an oatmeal base and i fancy adding that in my soaps. So my question is, do i have to get cosmetic oatmeal (if that exists) or will a packet from asda or somewhere do ? Also do i have to do anything to it before i add it to my soaps ? as i'm wondering if it will float into the rest of my soap when i pour it on top.

Oatmeal from local store is no problem (and could be cheaper as a large soapmaking supplier would be adding VAT).

With MP you need to stir it in gently and keep stirring smoothly (preferably with a rod/chopstick) until the soap starts to thicken (sort of sloppy porridge consistency) then pour quickly into your moulds.; if you don't want it suspended througout the soap then don't stir.

Pumice, or any other powdery bitty stuff will remain in suspension if you get your stirring/pouring time right.

If you want a layer on what will be the base of your soap when demoulded then first partly fill your moulds; let it form a skin then spritz with witch hazel or surgical spirit; add your oatmeal/whatever to the rest of the melted soap, stir and pour as above.

I bought some oatmeal soap years ago and my DH loved it !! He never makes any comments about anything, especially not soap, so he must have been really impressed.
I haven't seen it for sale anywhere again so you could be on to a winner.

I must've got the stirring wrong in the pumice. I will give it another go sometime if i can find it again

Hi,

If you put oatmeal in melt and pour soap would it make it go off? just wondering if i'd need to put any preservative in it?

Not that I'm aware of. AFAIK dried ingredients work ok in M&P (but don't take that as read, I don't make it) I think the trick with M&P is to get the oats or whatever evenly dispersed though the bar not just at the bottom.

I've not had any problem with it going off - IIRC there is a preservative in the base already.

Think you could be on to a good thing with oatmeal soap. I would be interested, I bought some years ago and it worked wonders on the skin, making it soft and silky. I haven't seen any for ages now.

Good luck and let us know if it's a success;)

There are lots of soapers making oatmeal soap - put handmade soap oatmeal into google with UK flagged and you'll get a few pages!
