    Hi,

I wonder if someone can help me.

I am just starting getting into Ceramics and am looking at Kilns etc still early days. What I want to do is create a tile say 6x6 Inchs that has a surface texture like rough sandpaper and the surface is white (or close to white) the glaze can be matte not glossy.

In order to do this would the texture be in the actual tile itself or would I make a normal flat tile and then create a white glaze that has the "sand" in it and then fire this onto the tile. ( Basically a non slip glaze )

Are there any websites that show you how to make basic glazes or any courses that might be suitable for this.

    Any advice greatly appreciated

Hi and welcome, my parents used to do slip cast ceramics and know about kilns and glaze etc, I'll ask them and let you know. If you can hang on until Thursday, I am doing a pottery course at college and I can ask the tutor your question and see what comes up.

If you pm me it will put your user name in my profile so that I can let you know the answer (just in case this thread disappears).

    Hope this helps

Default are these tiles going onto the floor to be functional or are they more artistic?

    Hi Paul,
are these tiles going onto the floor to be functional or are they more artistic?
One easy way to do it would be to get a white stoneware clay with lots of sand/grog included. Make your tiles let them stiffen then sponge the surface to reveal the sand/grog. You could just stoneware fire them without glaze and they would be white and matt. Not sure about your glaze it depends on the use. regards Robin Top Pot Supplies
