Substituting yarn headache

Hi all,

I've got a pattern for a top which recommends I use Patons Promise - can't seem to find it the shops though. What information do I need to make an accurate substitute? The tension in the pattern is 12sts/5 row to 2in using a 4mm crochet hook but I can't seem to find wool that has that tension? Should I just use a basic DK?

Do a tension square with your chosen DK and compare it with the tension given for Patons Promise, then adjust your pattern to fit the new tension.
You could be lucky and choose a yarn with the same tension or you may have to add/subtract a few stitches/rows.

Take care when using a substitute yearn as different ones have different yardage and you may run short you can always ask your supplier to put some extra away just in case.
