My last one went in at 16:45 on 31st January!!!
A week later my tax refund (all £43 of it!!) was in my bank account.

But do they automatically send the form to us or do we have to ask for it?

Hi Seahorse,
I think it's sent automatically, if I remember right from last year it came in April and you had to send it in by the end of September, or you can send it in by the end of January.
Sue.

I only started in July 2007 so I suppose I will get my first form in April this year? Is that right?

I registered in June last year and was told the form would be sent to me after 5th April 2008. I am really looking forward to it..........whoops, my nose has suddenly grown very long!

If you started trading in July 07, you will get your first self assement form in April 08.
This is due to be returned either on a paper form by Sept 08, where a tax officer will calculate your tax themselves
OR
you can apply for a log in and password and do it on-line. You then have up until the 31st Jan 09 to complete it for year ending April 08.

^^ Don't think that's quite correct - if you want HMRC to calculate your tax it has to be in in September, whether paper or online
