i want to paint a few finer details on before cooking but what paint is safe to use and what glaze if any should i use?

I would paint after baking with an acrylic type paint. You can use gloss laquer to varnish if you like or leave unvarnished whichever look you prefer.

Also to remove fingermarks and bits of dust you can very lightly sand your piece under water after baking. To avoid this in the first place wash hands thoroughly and always between colour changes from dark to light. Looking forward to seeing the pic!

Hope this helps
