Basic sewing help needed!!!

I'm making some tote style bags and I want to know which is the best way to sew along the bottom to make sure that they are strong enough. I only have a normal sewing machine so can't do very fancy stitches. These will be used as alternatives to carrier bags in the supermarket. Any ideas? I now know not to use invisible thread so any other tips please!

Hmm... Have you tried something like button thread - much stronger than normal machine cotton. When I want stronger stitching I tend to go over the same seam two or three times. Then, if one line wears and breaks there's still a couple more rows as back-up! Not exactly technical expertise I know but I tried! :0)

I go over my seams several times and I use stronger thread.You can use invisable thread for this as well sence they will not be washed or tumble dryed much.

I use french seams for my tote bags strenghthens and neatens in one.;)

to strengthen my seams, i usely either use double thread, a stronger thread or as previously mentioned different seaming.

u could also bind your seams? Saves ovelocking inside, but is also extra strength as you will have sewn twice on that particular seam. it also looks quite funky!! But most of all, make sure you use a long lasting fabric!

Well I've lined up testers to test them out before I go into proper production - I just wanted to make sure that they would be strong enough to start with!

Have you thought about not having a seam at the bottom?

You cut your fabric and then fold it, sew up the sides and attach your bag handles (securely with cross in a square arrangement)

Then the bottom of the bag is strong.
