brother sewing machines are good. One thing I would advise though, is that whatever one you get, you get it from John Lewis, becasue they have the whole never undersold thing, which is realy handy on electrical goods, and they have the best customer service ever i think! A lady in my works oven broke, and hotpoint refused to fix it, so she got onto John Lewis and they picked it up for her and gave her a new one, and said they would deal with hotpoint for her!

Hi Maria
I recently bought a Janome from www.sewingmachinediscount.co.uk (http://www.sewingmachinediscount.co.uk)
It was delivered next working day and the machine is excellent. They have some really good offers and upgrades too.

I would suggest buying from a sewing machine specialist, taking a sample of the fabric that you wish to sew with you. This way you can test the machine completely prior to making a purchase. As for which make Pfaff,Bernina,Husqvarna,Brother and Janome to name a few are excellent.

I have a Brother sewing machine and so far its great. It is better to have a demonstration and give it a try so as you know you are comfortable sewing with it. I do patchwork, make bags, raggedy annies and costumes for the school play and more on mine and I think it cost under £200.

I recently bought a new one from sewingmachinesdirect. Can't fault their service, or the machine - a Brother ES2020 for £139 with lots of thread and accessories, and very easy to use. But it is a bit lightweight for the heavy use it gets from me and I do wish I had gone along somewhere to have a play with different ones. So a lot depends on how much use you will want out of it. Try one first if you can, then order from Sewingmachinesdirect! ;)

I got mine from my local sewing machine specialist. I got great advice from them and am really happy with the machine I got. It's a Janome 8077 (£269) but I got £50 trade in for my old machine.
I'd definitely recommend a Janome. Mine has a speed control on the machine which is really useful - means you can set that to the right speed and press your foot as hard as you like!!!

I`m a Husqvarna Viking fan myself! I`ve burnt out two Brother machines and a Janome overlocker but I pushed them a bit too far!
I`ve used my Husqvarna virtually everyday since I bought it two years ago and it`s fantastic........I liked it so much I bought another one! I also like Frister Rossman and Bernina.
If you go for a Janome, buy from a dealer not a catolgue etc.
Hope you find something that gives you lots of hours of sewing fun!

I just bought a Pfaff machine from Singer Machines Ltd (websites singermachines.co.uk and pfaffmachines.co.uk).
The machine arrived within one working day. I must say that their customer service has been excellent. I was having a problem and phoned up and was taken through setting up step-by-step (even though I thought I knew what I was doing ). We managed to get to the bottom of my problem and it works perfectly now.
The makes of machine that I have most often seen recommended are:- Janome, Bernina, Pfaff, and Husqvarna.
Hope you find something that suits you!
Best Wishes
Julia
