I have tried using my cutting dies, first to cut then to emboss. I don't have much success with the emboss. I use a Big Shot machine.

I am using Sizzix Dies on my Big Shot. I run it through with the machine with the platform , plastic plate, magnetic sheet, die facing upwards, card, finishing with plastic plate. It cuts out well. Then when I emboss it using a latex pad, I am not happy with the result. The embossing is not deep enough.

I am going to ask more questions (sorry) because there are so many possible solutions depending on what you are using and it will save time to narrow down the problem if we can.
What kind of sizzix dies are you working with?
What kind of card/paper are you using?
Are you embossing within the die - trying to get a deeper embossed edge or detail for example - or are you trying to emboss something you have already cut?
Do you have a MPP (that is the platform that has pages a bit like a book) and if so what sandwich are you using for cutting and for embossing?
Have to admit I rarely use my embossing mat ... If you have a solo platform it may be simply that you need a shim

The dies are ones that have the sharp cutting pattern and then some detail that can be embossed within the die. I cut first, then emboss. The platform is the one like a book. I use them all to cut the die, then use just the base layer with the silicone pad and the two see through ones. I did add a bit of card as a shim as it was too loose.

You could try doing it with one layer on the platform...but obviously don't push it if it doesn't want to go. Thinlits are designed for paper and thin card - they will cut 250gsm but sometimes detailed designs and embossing doesn't come out quite so well on card over 200gsm. Some dies are particularly tricky..if I knew which one you are struggling with I might be able to help.
