Oh.
My.
God.
And he seriously seems to think that someone would look at that and go "Yes, I'd like to be the world record holder for being the most stupid person to have lost 5 million ever."

That's crazy!!
And what's even crazier is that 7 people have bid on it! :o
There's been a lot of discussion about it on the ebay community boards (http://forums.ebay.co.uk/thread.jspa?messageID=1103554100).
If you've got a spare 5 minutes it's worth scanning all the posts because at one points someone tells the seller he's being discussed and he joins in!
They can't work out if he's
(1) money laundering
(2) bidding on it himself
(3) insane

Should I email him to say that Argos have got them back in?

He's been told - says he wants to get into the Guinnes Book of Records.
His Final selling fees are up to about 50K.
Madness!

Agreed, there must be hundreds of cheaper ways to get in.......or maybe the buyer will get an entry for 'Most Stupid Person in the World'.

Absolute Insanity!
If the winning bidder does pay, they have more money than sense!! Especially as its just for a record and not for charity!
