Can anyone give me some advice on logos?

I would like to create some sort of logo that I can use on my website and to use to make my own custom made stationery (labels, business cards and such like).

I've searched on google but I just got even more confused.

I don't have any desktop publishing software yet. I have thought about buying some but am not sure what to get. I have a mac and the cheaper software seems to be for PCs. I also want something which is simple like me :D

I know that on Etsy people will do customised banners etc for your etsy shops - they may also be interested in designing you a logo. I would like to make my avatar more Christmassy but I haven't the faintest idea of how to do it. I'll have to ask Mr Swirl later!

Have you got the basic microsoft package? You can use wordart in powerpoint or word..... I don't have any software packages either but as much as I hate to say it microsoft pacakages are fairly user friendly..... I use powerpoint for drawing 3-d plans and I have successfully created a logo in word recently

I've done a bit of graphic design in the past...and randomly I trained as an architect and I've always found simplicity in designing to be the best advice...A simple word processing package will normally do as the others suggest.

Use at most 2 fonts for wording..I find using a few sizes of the same font to be the most successful and try and use one of the main fonts...ie verdana as the more obscure ones will cause you issue with web design and stationery etc.
Pick a colour scheme..and try and limit the colours to ones you can easily replicate in stationery etc....also another great trick is to pick a shape as a motiff that you can use to give yourself a recognisable branding identity..I use a rounded square at an angle. It sounds a bit OTT but i've got some cards printed with the symbol dye cut out and they look really effective!

...btw I used macromedia freehand which is the niftiest package i've found for doing that sort of thing. ..You should be able to get a trial version from macromedia themselves..or from a file sharing website.

I can use Paintshop Pro, and Adobe Photoshop - Swirly if you want any help making your logo Christmassy I can help. I designed my logo using Adobe. I taught myself to use Adobe Photoshop a long time ago, I find its a case of trial and error to pick it up, but I agree with Glasskanvas that you could design a logo using a word processing package.

hi there are quite a few online sites that will design you a logo for free.
you basically have to chose from designs, colours etc and put in your own text. i've made some great logos from them. if you email me i'll send you the web addresses of two great ones.
