I understood he was kinda closing the books so to speak to new business for a few months due to being too busy...

I hadn't heard he was no longer taking on small business clients

I've got a list of other assessors somewhere so I'll dig it out and put them on here if that's allowed?

Ok... Here is the list of Safety Assessors in the UK that I have together with their contact details...

I hope it's ok to post this as it does contain outside links? If not can someone please tell me if I need to adjust anything...

Smallburgh Laboratories Ltd
01306 627180

Adams Wilson & Associates Ltd
01536 410800

Microbiological Solutions Ltd
01617 668555

Jasan Cosmetic Laboratories
01162 811801 / 07710 381201

I can't post the links to the websites as I've not made enough posts and I also have a batch of email addresses that were forwarded to me from the Soap Kitchen - again I can't post those but they can be obtained from the Soap Kitchen or I can email them direct...

I did have some info from Advantis (info supplied by the Soap Kitchen) which said that a basic assessment (no water!!!) with ingredients already contained within their data base would cost around £60 plus £1.50 for each individual material - plus VAT...

Don't know if this has changed now as I was going to use Innovant for my cold process... Now it's a matter of doing the rounds obtaining quotations...

Hope this helps...

This is based on the formula, £60 + £1.25 for each ingredient declared plus £15 for each additional variation, with the same base formula, + £1.25 for each additional extra ingredient. VAT is than added on top.
That is what advantis quoted me the other day.

www.stuck.co.uk are really expensive they want £135.00 for the base plus £35.00 for each fragrance plus vat.

there the only other ones that have come back to me so far. but that was last week.

Have to say John was more than fare, he has done all my other certificates, and he was the cheapest around. hence maybe that's why he has more work than he can cope with.

Hi
I came across this site by accident. I think I'm glad I found it but it's got me worried. I'm currently waiting for my safety certificates from Innovant via a third party (which I don't know if I can mention by name). Ive been waiting for a couple of months with little communication coming my way. I'm really worried now that I've forked out nearly £600 for something which may not arrive. My new business is ready to be up and running, stock and products ready to go. What do I do now?

Hmmm... I'd be worried just at the idea of waiting months for the certification anyway to be honest...

I've just started working with the gentleman who's going to be doing mine and he's assured me it's going to be about three weeks maximum from when I supply the data to me receiving the safety certificate.

I would suggest that you contact John Hopkins direct - I can't post his email on here as I've not made enough posts to qualify to put links in my post but you can email me via my website or send me a pm and I'll gladly forward it to you...

I'm not 100% sure it's operational any more but if it's not, I do know someone who can contact him fairly easily and would be able ask him to check for certain whether your application was ever received for him to work on...

Hope this helps...

I've had contact from my "middle man" (strangely enough quite soon after I posted this) and I'm told that everything is in hand. So I'll wait a little longer. If nothing comes soon I may still contact you if that's OK.
Thanks
Maggie:)

so, this may seem like a silly question, but i'm still a newbie! When you get certified, i know that you have to poduce a report detailing everything....do you have to send the soap in also for it to be tested, just to make sure that you're not giving anyone a really bad chemical peal or anything?

Hiya,

You don't send the soap in, they can tell from your formula and ingredients whether or not it will be safe for skin.

Actually I have to send samples of each product for each assessment I have...

For my own I had to include all the following information:

Written manufacturing practice...

The base recipe ingredients and percentages etc...
For CP soap the superfat percentage and the variable oils...
A list of the variable ingredients such as botanicals, colourants etc and the percentages of use...
A list of the Fragrance oils and/or Essential oils and percentages of use...

The suppliers and their contact details...
For CP soap, details of the calculator...

Samples of the finished product including the labels to ensure that the labelling meets EU regulations...

An example of a PIF sheet to ensure that is or will be maintained properly...

Oh, and if using bought in bases for say M&P or creams/lotions - the full ingredients listing of each pre purchased base would need to be disclosed with the supplier details...

I think personally it's ok if they ask for samples of the finished product - the assessor has to be willing to stand in court and back your manufacturing process and finished product in the event you get sued... To actually have 'proof' so to speak in their sticky little paw of the product they are signing their name to is fair and responsible I think...

Hi there, theres a guy in edinburgh doing the testing too for soaps, etc. Im only starting next month. You'll get him under andrew.mackie@edinburgh.gov.uk. Have a go for the testing through him perhaps, cheaper for you.

Hi again
Not been on for a while. Just to let you know I got my safety assessments - just a little patience was required. However I'm now moving into CP and HP soaps which will have to be assessed separately so I'm really pleased to see the last link re testing in Edinburgh.
Thanks
Maggie:)
