View Full Version : copyright
I have come across some lovely pictures in an old book. Has anyone used scanned in pictures like this to make cards for sale? If so how old does the book have to be to be free of copyright?

She uses the originals, not a copy of them.
Copyright persists for 75 years after the death of the author (I believe). Copyright would still exist in the publication of it (e.g. the typeface used etc).
Unless the work is published within the public domain, you are best off either using the original, or not copying it.

From what I understand of copyrighting (after a conversation with a fellow badge maker on etsy) is that you should be ok if you use an original but don't copy that image again and again. For example, I use old comics, annuals etc that I have bought in a charity shop and I then cut that book up to make badges etc. What wouldn't be ok is for me to make numerous copies of the original. Hope this helps a little!
Thanks for that I think I'm getting the picture - can you help with this scenario :-
I like Vincent van Gogh's work and had a memorable visit to Arles a few years ago. I design & sell greetings cards and would like to use some of his images. I understand that the UK copy right is for 70 years after the artist's death. That would seem to make it ok to use his work but obviously I can't have the original so would have to use a copy.
My question is do I need permission from the publisher of the copy before I can copy the copy and how did the publisher get permission in the first place to be able to make a print?
Does the owner of the original effectively own the copyright?
I'm just making handmade cards on a small scale but want to do things right. Any advice would be a great help.
Thanks
Nell
im a card maker and im sure you cant use the original picture with out pemmission from its owner that includes scanning and photocoping there are so many rules you will be suprised at what you will find:confused:
