I will be running a traditional lampshade making course at Homemade London (homemadelondon.com).

This will be a 2 day intensive course where you will learn how to make a tailored bowed empire lampshade with a silk lining. Handouts will be supplied along with plenty of support and know-how so you can leave happy and with your very own handmade, one-of-a-kind lampshade.

Just register your name to receive the Homemade London newsletter, keep checking their website, like the Cocoon Home Facebook page or email me (enquiries@cocoonhome.co.uk) and we’ll let you know as soon as they are confirmed.

My mum used to make lampshades for a living, when she worked on the factory site she did everything, including welding the frames, but then she worked from home and used to get hundreds of frames delivered each week, along with millions of rolls of plastic tape (for the pleated look ones), pre-sewn fabric pieces, glue, bias tape for the top and bottoms of the frames and braiding.

We used to earn pocket money by either preparing the frames for her (the stitched fabric ones had bias tape wrapped around the top and bottom of the frames and plastic tape on the down bits), or cutting around the fabric for her.

She did everything from clip on frames (the little tiny wall light ones) upto the big standard lamp sizes :)

So that's where you get your love of making things from! Hopefully, I can revive a dying craft as I teach the handstitched method (probably how your mum made them). Only one place left on the course too and we're already looking to running another
