View Full Version : Acrylic Paints
I currently have the Deco-Art Crafters Acrylic paints and find they seem to be quite wishy washy when painting, even when doing a second coat they sometimes seem a bit patchy. This is when I paint on MDF, they seem fine for normal wood. I'm looking for some acrylic paints that are a bit thicker but around the same price bracket. Can anyone recommend any? Ideally I'd like to be able to use just one coat of paint.
Thanks in advance
Jem

hi
Are you sealing the MDF before you paint, you can use a proper sealer or you can mix 50/50 UPA glue and water.
You could try using the deco-art americana range, they are very good as i use them to paint Tole and Decorative pictures.
The paint i mainly use for MDF is reeves acrylic, it comes in tubes and is very good at covering MDF and wood too.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried using a 'quick dry all purpose primer and undercoat' but it doesn't seem to make much difference. I haven't heard of reeves, i'll look into them. Is the deco-art americana range thicker than the crafters acrylic?
Thanks again

Hi Jem
yes it is, crafters acrylic is ok if you are messing around, but for good coverage you need good paint, if you go to my website and into the Painting section you can see a few of my Tole painting pictures using Americana, but if you go into woodworking you can see the reeves colours being used on my T light Hearts.

Crafters Acrylics is a low-cost paint, primarily used for base-coating. Americana is a better quality acrylic - typically 1 coat of Americana is equivalent to 2-3 coats of Crafters.
We have noticed that some colours are better than others ... some of the reds in Americana do need a few coats.

A good quality artists' acrylic will have better coverage and is thicker in consistency. I use Liquitex, which is good. Some shades will always need more than one coat though - usually the pure colours like red, blue or yellow. Anything mixed with white will give better coverage.
Thank you for the replies.
I have just ordered some Americana acrylics which should arrive this week so hopefully they'll do the trick.
Is there any reason that reds and primary colours need more coats than other colours?
I looked at the Liquitex range and they're quite a bit more expensive than Decoart so I shall give the Americana a go and then maybe try the Liquitex. Its all about trial and error right?

I would agree that Americana acrylics are one of the best that you can find right now.
