I am going to be making some Roman Blinds for a square bay window and trying to work out the best way of measuring up to allow for the fabric pleats when the blinds are open.

I thought that if I make up the front blind allowing the usual 1cm clearance, and for the side windows, allow for the depth of the headrail plus 1cm clearance, but just worried in case 1cm will not be enough clearance and the side blinds will interfere with the main blind. I also want to avoid allowing too much clearance which may result in big gaps between the blinds when they are down!!

The other way maybe would be to deduct the headrail depth from each side blind, and twice the headrail from the main window, and then allow a further 1cm for clearance, (so the blinds meet in the corners).

I would appreciate help and advice on the best method to use, and how much to allow for clearance. What would you do Sharon?

Many Thanks.

The answer lies in how you measure the blinds in the first place Stitch Crazy.

The common mistake here is to measure the window frame. What you will need to do is to project a vertical line down onto the window board from the exact point where the blinds will hang, allowing for the depth of the track or batten. If you do this in each corner of the window you will have the exact point where the blinds will join. If you measure the three blinds from here and deduct 5 mm or so from the contact edges of each blind you will find that this will be a sufficient allowance to provide space for the blinds to ease themselves together when the blind is pulled into its uppermost position.
