View Full Version : National Insurance question
I registered with HMRC a few months ago and have received my letter with my tax reference number. What happens about NI conts - is that something you have to deal with separately?
I'm already paying Class 1 conts through my full time employment so do i still need to pay class 2 conts?

You might well be able to get an exemption from the class 2 conts if you are already paying class 1.
I finally got round to applying for an exemption a few months ago because I am paying class 1 via my main employment and I also have far more years contributions to my credit than are required to qualify for the state pension (although they keep moving the goalposts!).
The certificate came through no bother and it is valid for four years, so worth making the application.

Hello Angi
To be absolutely sure you really need to chat to someone at HMRC about your personal circumstances regarding N.I. - I know it's a hassle to get through on the phone, but it's worth it.
