Is by my calculations, going to cost me about £1,200 a year to feed!!!!!
He had bladder stones for which he had an op which cost £300 just before we went on hol and now the vet says that he needs to have a 'special' (aka'expensive') diet to balence out something or other in his urine...
eeeeeeeek going tomorrow to see the vet and collect the food which i'm presuming will be wrapped in gold paper, may have to talk to the vet about this!!!!!!!!
Anyone else been financially raped by the vet lately???

Hi, I can sympathise with the vet bill, my cat just cost me over £700 . Apparently he has a very rare disease which means he has loads more blood (or blood cells?) than he should have and his blood is really thick so it doesn't take oxygen around his body like it should. We came back off holiday to find he was totally loony, he didn't have a clue what he was doing. Apparently this is a forever illness and the only way to treat him is to take some blood from him, unfortunatley this costs £70 every time they do it because they have to sedate him. Luckily five weeks after having his last lot of blood taken hes still okay, the way the vet was talking it was going to be a weekly / fortnightly event (gulp!).
I knew the bill was going to be bad when the receptionist looked at me and said "You dont have insurance?" in a worried kind of way.
We love him to bits and wouldnt consider not paying for his treatment but it does make my eyes water every time I hand over my credit card.
If anyone knows where I can buy some leeches cheap I might be interested :sm:.
I hope your dog appreciates his new luxury food.

As previous post hubby and 2 kids - no pets - but my sister in law had a Rotweillier (he was lovely though not scary!!!) he developed diabetes and SL not insured it cost her by direct debit £80 a month just for his Insulin (she had to inject the dog) and that was before any vet treatment bills. He died at the beginning of the year, SL never got his tail docked (didn't want to do it) but because of the diabetes his tail got infected and had to be chopped but it was too late and the infection took over the rest of him. He was treated for diabetes for about 5 years and it cost a fortune. If I was to get a pet (which is unlikely I have enough animals with my lot in the house as it is!!!) would definitely take out insurance paying out a small amount each month doesn't hurt as much as paying out a huge sum at the one go.
Cheers.

Wow, those are some vet bills. I have a 3year old boxer and i haven't insured her but it will now be on the list as top priority for things to do

I've looked into this and it seems that they are hardly worth it if your doggie (like mine) has a long term condition, the insurance would only pay a certain amount 'per condition' and also they won't pay out for any 'existing condition' so all in all it's probably cheaper just to pay the vets bill!!
So i went to vets and got the luxury doggie food, alas there was noooo gold wrapping, but one concilation is that he says i just need to feed him it for a month solid to balance something out in the urine, then said vet is going to give me some drugs to put in his normal food as this would be the 'cheaper option' i've yet to find out how much cheaper 'cheaper' is.
19.00 for food that is going to last him 6 days....... need to go get more next week when i've sold my body a few times...
eeeeeek i hardly spend that on myself!!! We love him though, here is a piccie of him on hol (he's the Labrador) with his little pal...

I have 3 rescue cats and a rescue rottweiler/labrador cross (who's kept in his place by the cats!). They're all insured through Animal Friends Insurance (find them through Google) who are non-profit making with all profits going to animal causes. Reasonable priced policies some of which do cover on-going conditions - The policies have saved me a fair bit in the long run.
Another thing now is that you can get your vet to issue the prescription and buy the stuff you need online, often significantly cheaper, particularly some of the food. Also things like flea treatment - my vet wanted £36 for Frontline treatment for my cats, buy the same stuff online through Petmeds for only £14 - A significant saving!!

I have a 14 year old cat who has had a recurring problem since birth, I swear my eyes water every time the receptionist tells me how much it will cost. Still I wouldn't be without her.
I have recently added 2 bunnies to the household, it cost me £35 to have the male neutered and I think its about £60 for the female, thats without the yearly injections!!!!
We must all be mad!

Haha, surely if the male has been 'done' you don't need to worry about the female??
