Just want to throw some ideas around!
I use paper, pollyfiller, the very expensive modelling paste, and string.
What do you use?

Splodgy thick white Acrylic paint - let it dry thoroughly and then paint on top with Watercolours. It does a lot of its own thing and the results can be quite exciting...! Nancy

PVA glue mixed with acrylic paint. I use black paint & neat PVA to get a leading effect like stained glass windows.
Grains, papier mache pulp, yarn, embroidery cotton, anything really.

Gesso works sometimes. I know an artist that uses it regularly. His latest few projects are about textured work - check them out if you like .... http://andyskinnerorg.blogspot.com/
