I saw the pictures on GMTV today - terrible 3 people dead - you don't expect such extreme weather in Britain.
We have some sun today so hopefully things are changing and Britain might get a chance to dry out.

Its saying the high point is some time late this afternoon.. so no drying until way after that..
I remeber flooding when I was a kid.. school was shut for about a week..

The main road in our village was flooded, but fortunately it missed out our street. When I took Genevieve to school this morning, a couple of her teachers aren't in due to flood damage and trying to bail out their houses
I live at the top of a valley. If we ever get flooded it means the whole of Bath has disappeared, so hopefully it will never happen!

its been pretty wet i was trapped in the house yesterday, but I did manage to get my tax return done!!!
The road was flooded, and the cellars started to flood, but that does happen every two three years or so anyway.
I have been lucky, its so sad that people have lost their lives.
Also that dam may burst, that looks very scary. And then there's the whole clean up operation.
I think the councils ahould be penalised for allowing planning on flood plains, because even if the new houses don't flood the problem gets passed on to further down the stream/river.

We're lucky here in Cambridge - I think they have some good flood defences further up the river Cam.
The other half's family are in Hull, and his mum got trapped in work :o I can't think of anything worse than being trapped at work ;)

Don't tell Lisa ... she's already afraid of work ... she'll never go in again if she hears that lol.
In all seriousness, it is dreadful what is happening. Hubby works in Immingham and said that a lot of people left early yesterday as they had to travel across the Humber Bridge back into Hull.
I remember the last time Sheffield was seriously flooded, it was awful. The biggest problem though isn't the flooding, it's the massive clean up operation afterwards. The poor families in Leeds who have just had their insurace assessors round from their floods 3 weeks ago are under water again

I've only heard the news - haven't watched it but they have evacuated three villages near the dam in case it bursts. My parents live near a river and have their sand bags out at the moment. They are hoping that Fountains Abbey (National Trust place near their town) doesn't open it's flood gates because it all flows into the river and that's how their road got flooded two years ago. Luckily they are slightly higher up than their neighbours but it's not much fun for their neighbours - most of whom are elderly.

Just heard on the local radio news that they're actually pumping water out of a resevoir that's expecting to overflow ... my question is though ... where the hell are they going to put the water. The UK is like Atlantis at the min, and it's not as though Sheffield / Rotherham where the main problem is around here is close to the sea for 'disposal' of it all.

hello... I'm still dripping with all the rain etc we've had. Monday the rumour started round that we should head up to the school to evacuate the children. Thought this was a wind up. The school is on a hill!
Got near to the school having waded knee deep through water and found that the teachers and children were stuck in the school. we had to carry the kids through the water all the way home. I had Eden and her friend and they were so good. it was frightening. I'd carry one girl so far and then leave her and go back for the other. Got home eventually but the village was a real mess. Man hole covers had been lifted up by the force of the water and an underwater stream had burst free and was teaming down the road at a furious force.
The teachers stayed in local houses over night as they could not get their cars out because of the floods.
Today the village is a real mess. the water has gone but there is mud everywhere and the road around the man hole covers are like craters.
There are lots of people in Hull still stranded in their homes.
i have to say though it has been amazing how much people have helped each other and there is a real community feeling around.
Can't say I ever want to go through that again!

Golly, glad to hear your ok BBD.
What's your village called?
I've been watching it on the news on and off... it looks terrible.
It's good to see people helping each other though.
I think we've been really lucky around here, don't seem to have got half the rain that other people have. Hope it's not heading for us.
Last time there was flooding here in the 50's it was before the docks were built, and the river overflowed it was really bad. Lots of people died. The water came up to the bedroom windows on my road. (before my time though)
Now that the docks are there i don't think the river will get to us.... but the sea might. don't think it's the same though is it? high tides don't really go with the rainfall i think it's more to do with the wind direction. Everytime there's a high tide here part of the promenade crumbles away...
:o Sounds awful .... and the weather forecast for the next few days doesn't look much better.
I'm counting my blessings that I live on the top of a big hill above a valley.

Some friends in Anlaby were flooded, but Brough seems to be okay at the moment

Anlaby has had it twice recently. Brough was sogggy in places especially round the saltsground road area and the station. The barclays bank bit got flooded.
I have got no phone line still and so put my mobile contact details on the web site only to find that my mobile has shorted because of the damp.
Do we have a swearing icon?

Oh my goodness, you don't really realise the true horror of the situation this week until you chat to people who are in the middle of it all.
I hope that it has subsided now and that things are starting to get back to normality for you all.

we are very lucky we didn't get flooded. A friend of mine did and I wonder how she will cope. Life has been incredibly hard for her recently. Divorce, mentally ill daughter, struggling to get through her nurse traing and now she's lost her home. There was a couple of foot of water flowing through.

They're by the station, so it sounds like they got very lucky. It sounds like the garden was flooded, but that's all.
Next time we're visiting for more than just a flying visit we'll have to meet up. My Mum's cousin lives in Eversthorpe, and wants me to pop in, but I don't really know her.

You see it all on the news and think how dreadful, those poor people and think about how dreadful it would be to happen to you, but like you say it is not until it happens to you or you speak to people it has happened to that it really hits home. So scarey and I really feel for them, one of my regular customers is in Sheffield but luckily for her she is high up but she said further down it is dreadful. Luckily for us we are nowhere near ay of it and in an area not likly to be either. Your poor friend BBD, must be at the end of her tether.
