Quilt question

I'm about to embark on a small quilt - well applique thing - for the UK Etsy Challenge. Basically I'm appliquing (?) little bits to a bigger bit to make a picture. I'll also be attatching things like sequins etc to it. My question is that I assume I quilt it once the main bits are on and before the sequins etc. are put on. Also - do I put the stuff in the middle (batting?) and the back on before I quilt it?
Really dumb questions I know but I like to jump in at the deep end!!

If it was me, I would do all the appliquéing and sequining on my fabric before putting it together with the wadding and the backing, then I would stitch it inside-out round 3 sides then turn it the right way round, like a big bag. Then hand stitch the 4th side then carefully pin and sew accross the whole thing to keep it all in shape. Does that make sense?

That makes sense to me Helen. When I did a small cot one quite a few years ago, I did it the hard way sewing in the lining as I went along what you've just said makes much more sense.

I know this response is a little late, but I quilt.

In this situation, I would do the applique on the top first.

Secure the sandwich of top, batting and backing fabric together.

Quilt from the centre outwards.

Bind the edges and then apply the sequins to the appropriate area (once an item is quilted, it has quite a different appearance to when it is totally flat, which is why I suggest working in this way).

Thanks for that! Thats the advice I was looking for! I've already done the quilt (well it is more like just the top) but I will make another one at some stage soon!

Especially the one entitled Glitzy Quilts by Angela Madden as it tackles all the issues of adding glitz to your quilting. On the website you can see pages from this book. Hope this is helpful to you.

Technically this is not a quilt as it does not sandwich three layers but...

for small quilts I often use the colour fleece you can buy by the metre as the backing and forgo the wadding as padding isn't required. This makes a very warm quilt and its less hassel!!
