Hello, I have just recently began a residency in a primary school and part of my job is to create an installation on the hall wall.

My plan for the installation was to ask every member of staff and every pupil to make one tile each 20 X 20 CM, quite a lot of tiles!

I agreed this in my interview but now they tell me the wall is made of plasterboard!

There is the option of hanging from the ceiling but then what do I attach the ceramics hanging from the ceiling to? So I would screw a baton to the ceiling but then what? I don't want to be responsible for anyones untimely death.

Help me, they think I am an engineer

Can you not get some kind of display screen that you can stand flat against the wall, maybe even fasten them against it so they don't topple? Then hang the tiles on that. (Be sure to put hanging holes in the tiles when you make them for ribbon etc, makes them easier to hang).

Hi Michelle,
A plasterboard wall will have wooden uprights inside (often 2' apart). First find where the uprights are. Then cut mdf board to fit the distance between them. The wood uprights will be 2 -3" thick so rember to measure to halfway across the upright so there is room for the next mdf board.
Then stick your finished tiles to wooden mdf sheet (size2' x 2') using a ceramic to wood tile adhesieve (this is a resin adhesieve and very hard to remove when it has set, so clean up as you go). A 2' x 2' board with ceramics tile stuck to it will be pretty heavy so you might consider running a batten at the bottom of the wall to rest the edge of the first boards on. When i have dione this I also had an electric tile cutter to cut down some of the tiles to improve the fit.
I hope my description is clear enought to follow.

Then screw the boards to the wood uprights.

I didn't ask is this a permanent display or temporary?
