Just to get the Christmas ball rolling, I thought I'd share this 'recipe'. These are easy to make. Cinnamon can be bought cheaply in bulk from Asian supermarkets or on eBay. If you make your own applesauce, you might need more cinnamon & glue. I use USA measuring cups, but any cup will do as long as you use the same cup for all the ingredients!
CINNAMON APPLESAUCE ORNIES
3/4 cup apple puree (heinz babyfood is good or make your own)
1 cup cinnamon ground
2 tablespoons pva glue
Mix together until forms dough, you can add more cinnamon if too wet. Then roll between 2 sheets of baking or waxed paper (because it can be very sticky) to about 5mm thick and cut into desired shapes. You can reknead and roll the dough pieces for more shapes. Before baking take straw and make hole for hanging loop. Bake at about 100c or gas mark 2 for about 5 hours til hard and dry. Watch your shapes, they will start to warp, so turn them frequently. Cut out larger shapes than you want, as the dough will shrink a fair bit. Your house will smell divine!
After they are baked you may have to file the edges with fine sandpaper or an emery nailfile, depending on how coarse your cinnamon was.
I make these in bulk, and cut out gingerbreadmen shapes, dala horse shapes etc. I then use a white 3D pen and draw 'icing' on them. I made over 200 gingerbread men to decorate my house (big house, LOADS of decs) and any spare ones I packaged prettily and sold at craft fairs!
They are great to make with kids, as long as the kids know they aren't edible! You can also make these look really folk arty by using scraps of homespun fabrics and glued on buttons etc...your imagination is the limit! You can varnish them, but this will stop them scenting the room.
DO NOT MAKE THEM TO SELL AT MY FAIRS!!!!! I bagsy that......;):p

They smell for years, but I have refreshed some of my 5 year old ones with cinnamon candle oil on the backs.

I feel compelled to say that if you sell them or indeed, give them away, make sure you use non toxic pva, and label the bags very clearly. You don't have to list the ingredients, but you must say that they are not toys and that they are not edible!!!
They don't contain anything toxic, and unless eaten in vast quantities, they won't cause any harm. One would have thought that the concentrated cinnamon would prevent a second bite being taken, but you never know with some wee ones...!

I KNOW ..... I can't believe I didn't get in there first :fencing:
Any idea how cinnamon fairs up at 1000 deg C? All this talk has got me wondering if I can add it to my slip when pouring. If nothing else, it will smell nice when my kiln is on :mf: I tried an experiment with orange peel in it a few months ago and it smelled absolutely yummy ..... although once it started to burn it didn't lol.

They sound gorgeous. My 2 boys love making things so I'll have to give it a try. They're busy designing calendars to give as Christmas gifts at the moment, so these would be a lovely accompaniment :D

I'm assuming it's an abbreviation for ornaments, although I'm not 100% certain.

It's an American recipe, and they say ornies, like we might say deccies for decorations. I must make some of these before Bath....

Cinnamon is so cheap on eBay! Makes your postie smell festive too.....;)
I'm woeking on combining the cinnamon & apple puree with a salt dough recipe. I'm trying to get less shrinkage.

I'm going to give these a try, thanks for the recipe. Can you tell me what pen you use? I've checked out so many white 3d pens and none of them are suitable for pourus materials like wood and dough! Which are the two materials I work with. Thanks again

I've tried lots of things, even white correction pens, but in the end I went for Anita's 3D paint in Glossy White, which looks like icing. Takes about 24 hours to dry properly though.

can i bagsy andalucia area for next chrimbo? :D
Do these have to be baked ?
I try and just air dry my salt dough, less shrinkage, warping, cracking.
takes longer, but cheaper.
Luckily here I can just put them by a south facing window, most any day of the year, and they dry quite happily.
Also handy for several stage pieces as easier to add to without obvious joins, etc , than when baked!!

How long do they take to air dry?
What would be the best way to store these if they were made in bulk, would they need an airtight container?

One of those self-sealing freezer bags, or a bag without ventilation holes tied tightly at the top. As long as they are stored away from moisture they should be fine. I've a bag of them in my workroom cupboard and they've been there 18 months, and they are as new. Just make sure you bake them until dry, turning frequently to prevent warping. Don't roll the dough out to less than ½ centimetre, or they will warp big time.
