Waistband question

Hello to you sewers.

Im making a skirt for a friend.She has chosen a thin cotton, a bit thicker than muslin.
I bought some cotton material for the underskirt/lining but I was wondering about the waistband.
As the material is quite flimsy should I sandwich a couple of layers of the lining within the waistband to make it bit stronger or add that bondaweb stuff that you can iron on to make things tougher....or anything else?

All suggestions appreciated.

You can buy waistband interfacing or heavy duty sew in or iron on interfacing.

The waistband will need something with a bit of body, or it will crumple up, and look untidy, especially if it's on view.

Bondaweb is NOT the stuff you need. If you want iron on interfacing, ask for 'fusible'.

I've just tried to do a search on ebay for "stiff interfacing" because I'm sure I've seen on there fusible fabric that you use when making bags.

Can't find any yet, shall keep looking, but I did type in "interfacing bags" as a search ..... LOOK at some of the American handmade bags - I feel really inadequate in comparison!!!

I'd be interested if you find any for bags as I need some too!! The book bag I made for Anya is fab but it is a bit too flimsy so before I make more I need to thicken up the material.

Iron-on interfacing (Vilene) in a medium weight should be fine for the waistband, cut narrower than the fabric and make sure you press rather than iron, so that it doesn't stretch and wrinkle your fabric. Or as Jules said you can get strip interfacing especially for waistbands.

If you prefer you can get sew-in interfacing, I just find it too much hassle...

Extre Heavy Interfacing; This can be bought from eBay. It's for making curtain ties backs etc. I bought some really cheap to making hanging pockets which needed stiffening to hold their shape. It's fusible too, which is really handy.

Try typing this into an eBay search 130108947662 and I can also recommend the seller, he's very efficient & friendly.

Another question/enquiry/business possibility for you sewy people.

For ages Ive had an idea in my head of decorating calico bags.
I have sourced some great bags with strong handles,but I need to sew on them, and as they are already made up it would be tough to sew right down to the bottom(I think they are over a foot deep).
Also Id like them dyed differnt colours.Im useless at dying.

So, as an enquiry, may I ask you-
1-Do you make robust calico bags with strong handles?
2-Can you dye them well?
3-If you do, could I ask them to be made to a certain size?
4-If you can make them could you make them complete except for sewing up the side edges(I have an overlocker and will attempt to do this myself once they are decorated)

Do you get what Im asking?Or am I doing a usual Seahorse of waffling like a gooden?!!

Oh, and if yes to this, how much would you charge per piece?

Just thought - if you've got an overlocker at home, why don't you cut the sides so that the bags lie flat and then overlock them when you've finished?

Yep, luckily I do have one, bought it 3 years ago and used it about 6 times!!Wish Id had it for the bridesmaids dresses I made.
I was thinking about doing as you suggested but I find that Im never happy with what I make, it always looks so untidy.
But I shall give it a go, see how I do.
