Hi All,
I have just had an e-mail from someone want to order but can only use cashiers cheque or money orders. What are the risks involved with this. I am assumign that they are from overseas because the English isn't very good (but hey mine isn't that great either).
I have replyed saying I would only accept them if they were in UK £ Sterling but haven't committed to anything.
Cheers.

Yes they need to be in £ sterling and also drawable from a uk bank. If they aren't then the banks charge £15 to £20 to cash them in, which unless they are a huge amount is no good. i have one stuck on the wall by my computer that i got many moons ago in my ignorance!

If its not in £ you need to contact your bank and find out what the charges are.. Also how long it will take for the money to get into your account..
Barclays are about 1-4 weeks for USD.. And charge loads like $12 or something..
If its a large amount I'd wait until it clears.. If its a small amount then maybe take the risk.. If you get stung then never do it again..
Lots of places in easten europe don't have credit cards hence these sort of problems..
Hope that helps..

I would be extremely wary about this. I had an enquiry from an overseas customer who said similar; it actually turned out to be a scam, they requested all sorts of information that started alarm bells ringing.
Yours maybe genuine, but do be aware of the problems. It could take several weeks before you knew if a cheque had cleared or bounced as it will go to your banks clearing office and then to theirs wherever that maybe located.
I do have some overseas customers, but I do state that they must pay via paypal in £ not $ and I will only ship to a paypal verified address.

Hi Caroline,
She has only asked if I accept them as payment because if she was to ask for any other details I would twig - don't trust strangers e-mailing me - most are geniune but there are a lot of con artists out there - lost count of how many times somebody rich has died and I have inherited it all, just get in touch or click on the link - do they think I zip up the back!!!
Cheers.

I agree that many people dont have credit cards, but basically anyone can pay with Moneygram, Western Union or cash in mail. Stay away from personal checks in currency that is different to the one of your country, because banks usually charge big fee, and it is easy to stop the check. Of course, it is possible to wait until check is cashed, if your buyer will agree to wait additional ~month, and if he cancel check bank will take additional fee from you, if few cases like this happens you can loose bank account.. So nothing good...

There is no such thing as a cleared cheque - you can cancel it at any time, and the bank can refund the money.
A bankers draft / cashiers cheque on the other hand, is as good as cash - providing it comes from a real bank and is not a forgery. For large sums, this is a popular scam - issue a forgery or fake from a bank that does not exist, and by the time the bank spots it's a dud, you've lost your goods.
I'd be wary, if it were me.

i work for nationwide and our counter cheques are the same as a bankers draft, the money comes straight out of the customers account, BUT still takes time to clear in the recipients account.
Also if we are given a foreign cheque, we have to say they can take UP TO six weeks to reach the account and a charge of £6 is taken off when the amount is converted.
Hope that helps
