Mobile POS thingys [Archive]

Sorry the title is a bit vague, but I'm not sure what they are actually called. I find at craft fairs that I have lost sales because I can only take cash or cheques. Many people don't carry chequebooks any more, and only a limited amount of cash, so I think I need one of those Chip and Pin POS mobile machines that you put a credit card into, and then the customer puts the pin number in, and away you go. I know you can get mobile ones that don't need to be plugged in, but that is about all I know.
Does anyone use these, and can you recommend a supplier? I have about 10 craft fairs booked this year, so don't need one full time, but it would have to be cost effective.

Hi,

I don't know much about the credit card machines. However I was at a craft fair in December and one of the stall holders had one. I spoke to her about them and the one that she had cost her £40 per month for the rental of the machine and I think they also take a percentage of the sale too. Decided not cost effective for me but if you more expensive items it might suit.

I asked the landlord of my local last year, he said he rented it off a bank, cant recall which,it was £14 a month.

I think the Royal Bank of Scotland do something where you ring a special number, give the persons credit/debit details and you get a confirmation that the funds have cleared - it goes into your own account within about 3 days. I think it s about £5 a month for that option, plus the cost of a call from your mobile.

My bank will loan me one, for a price! Have a word with the bank you are with. I have a business account, so I am not sure if that makes a difference.

Thanks everyone. It's a minefield, isn't it? I have read the thread that SwirlyArts posted, and at least now I have a better idea of what I need to do. I will contact my bank first as I have a business account with them, and see what they say first - they're the NatWest, and I don't think they were mentioned in that other thread, so I'll see what they offer....
