I've fallen in love with Japanese fabric but it seems expensive from American sites. Does anyone know of a UK distributor? Or Japanese style fabrics from a UK supplier?
Thanks in advance

....the Japanex thingy's prices....ouch!
Lynsey have you tried eBay? Alexander Henry has a japanese range out, as does Free Spirit fabrics. They are cotton, and around about $9 per yard on the US sites and about £9 per yard here. I haven't looked for silks though.

What sort of thing are you after? My flatmate sells vintage Japanese kimonos and has various bits of Japanese fabric, bolts of silk, embroidery panels and obis [the big sashes]. Her prices are excellent because she sources and imports them herself. She's also due to go to Japan again in May so could have a look then if you needed something specific. I can't post her website details cos I'm still new ......

I love the silks etc but it is more of the modern Japanese patterns I'm interested in like these. They are on reprodepot.com if anyone is interested.

They're very pretty - but not what my flatmate sells, she's strictly vintage. If you would like her to have a look for you when she's over in Japan in May, let me know. [I know, it's a long way off, but just in case]

Hi, we sell the leciens on our website but we don't have any silks at the moment. If there is anything in particular you like in the Lecien ranges we can see if we can get it for you. The 'My Folklore' range with the birds on looks like it might be your cup of tea!

Hi, new to the site and came across this posting, this reply might be a bit late all this time on, but here we go.
Have you tried a site called 'Ichiroya'? I buy all my kimono fabric from there. They sell tans of fabric (we would call these bolts) and while they are kimono width about 18" they are full kimono or haori (jacket) length - anything from 9 to 13 or so metres. Prices range from a few pounds up to the hundreds, depending on the technique used to make or decorate the silk and/or condition. They also sell kimono of all kinds, crafts, and antiques. They have some fabulous japanese sissors which I wouldn't be without.
Even if you don't want to buy stuff it's well worth checking out just for the pictures. They are really nice people and offer a very good service. Parcels arrive very quickly from Japan, within a 6-10 days and they don't charge the earth for postage.
In fact I've just had a parcel in today from them with 5 more tans, some antique hair combs, and a wonderful wooden box decorated with plum blossom. Oh my poor bank balance, oh well never mind.
In fact if you are looking for patterns rather than fabric, they have some obi and kimono design sheets at the moment. These are designs on paper mostly in colour. They also have design books occasionally, but these tend to go very fast so you have to be quick.
They list new items every day and if you are looking for something in particular they are very happy to respond to emails.
If you go to our nuido site and to the inspiration gallery you'll see quite a few items which have been bought from them! Not all mine I hasten to add.
Enjoy
