how long do cupcakes last?

Just wondering how long cupcakes last in an airtight container. Does the buttercream frosting go hard/soft after some time.

They never last long enough in our house to find out!

Seriously though, they'd probably be getting past their best after about 3 days.

Most of the cup cake makers I meet at Farmers Markets, will make fresh everyday for each market, some varieties they may sell the next day.

I guess it depends on whether you are selling them or not?

in my house less than a day! :D Butter icing will harden over time. I made my daughters christening cake and covered it with buttercream. That was nearly a week ago that it was made and iced. There are a few pieces left and the buttercream is a little more solid than it was when it was fresh - but it's also been cold and I used proper unsalted butter in it.

Whatever you do, make sure you seal them properly in an airtight container. Otherwise the buttercream will go hard in just a few hours. Not good!
