I never knew quilling could be such a detailed art form until you started this project! Thank you for opening my eyes!
If I was to start quilling from scratch where would be the best place to start?

Do you put the pins in to hold it while the glue sets? Looking good so far!

How long do you think it will take? How big is it?

So far I've spent probably about 3-4 hours on about 1/8th of the project!!!! I will have to take another photo to let you see how its getting on. So I reckon only another 30 hours to go... but I don't manage more than 1 hour most evenings so it will be a little while. It's about 10x12 inches.
I usually make up my projects in stages. I used to just make the shapes and then stick them straight onto the background card and build up the design like that, but found that this sometimes meant I wasn't happy with some of it or it wasn't positioned very well, so now I glue the shapes to each other in sections and then can move the sections around the card until I'm happy with the arrangement, so I put the design on tracing paper and then build it up holding the shapes in place with the pins while the glue sets.
Mel - if you want to give it a go I suggest you probably get a kit first. You can get some from either http://www.jjquilling.co.uk/ or www.quilledcreations.com (http://www.quilledcreations.com) I started off with a kit about 18 years ago!!! Scary thought that!

I've now started the coastline of North America (the wiggly green line) that small section took me 1 hour - yikes! :o
