Taking clothes in

Is there a foolproof way of taking clothes in? I have some dresses that I got from a jumble sale that are gorgeous but are just too big (a size/couple of sizes). I need to take them in all over really but particularly round the waist - do I just pin along the seams until it fits and then sew?

You put the dress on inside out, stand like a plum, on a chair, after youve roped a friend into pinning/taking the dress in so its more to your size.
