I am starting a knitting group in our community where pepole can come along and work on their projects and learn to knit.

One of the things we are keen on is for those who have spare wool and nothing to knit, to do some knitting for a good cause.

Initially was looked at knitting hats for preemie babies at the local hospital but upon cantacting the hospital they kindly pointed out that knitted stuff is not good for them as they need to be washed at very high temps for infection control. Undersandably.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what we could knit?

Short of knitting things for a stall to sell for proceeds to the group I have no idea....

Great idea - I love it when people can get together to craft. It's so much more fun than doing it alone!
Bunting seems very popular at the moment - but I don't know what you would use it for once it was done!
Have you looked at charities that target the homeless, or send blankets to deprived countries - I'd guess they are less likely to be stringent about hygiene!
Hope it takes off for you,
Mel

Try http://www.innocentdrinks.co.uk/supergran/ They did it last year and may well be doing it this year. I think it's a great idea and uses up those oddments of wool. Also worth a look http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/merseyside/6346423.stm
Might give you some ideas!!

You could contact them again and make it clear that you would be knitting the preemie hats using machine washable yarn (acrylic etc, non-wool) as this might help, as I know other hospitals are gladly accepting preemie hats :)

Good luck with your quest, whatever you decide!

How about knitting blankets for the elderly, maybe nursing homes, day care centres etc?
Maybe you could contact your local Oxfam for ideas

In my spare time (not very often unfortunately) I knit for the feed the children charity.

If you contact them via their web site they will send you a link to a really easy jumper pattern. It's great for beginners to learn with and more experienced knitters can 'show off' their skills by putting stripes/patterns etc on the same pattern.

They send knitted jumpers and blankets to babies/children in third world countries and it really is a worthwhile cause.
