Hello everyone.

Although sadly I am not a ceramicist my girlfriend is and I have come here, hoping she is not a member of this forum, to enquire about a gift idea.

Basically she has access to a studio and is dying to start working with porcelin and slip casting and the bit of kit she really needs apparently is a blunger. Searching for second hand blungers (or even new ones!) is bringing up next to nothing.

Could anyone advise me on where I could look to find one to buy either second hand or new. I gather you can get smaller hand blungers and then slightly bigger ones and from what she has told me about the kind of work she used to do at uni the bigger ones are more what she would be after however a hand blunger would suffice to begin with I think.

I still do not really understand what it is and how it works!

Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated. It doesn't seem like anyone ever sells these things.

Many thanks

Got this off the nett - hope it helps.
A blunger is a machine commonly used in the pottery industry for mixing clay and water. A blunger usually consists of a round or octagonal tank with a mixer

These guys are good 'Gladstone pottery equipment'

Also check out CTM potters supplies. they are good suppliers of pottery stuff..we use them all the time.

We dont have a blunger as we dont do cast wares so have no experience to pass on really. They stir up liquid slip in preperation for casting ceramic ware. the best sort pump the slip up a hose by which you fill up your mould. With all pottery equipment nothing good is cheap but the above mentioned usually offer good deals.

also check the ads in 'Ceramic review'

sorry i can't post urls as i am a newbee

hope this helps

Hi there

Many thanks for the replies.

Robin: That is a tempting option. I have been in touch with my girlfriends old ceramics tutor and showed her the ad and she has said that they had something similar for mixing glaze, but she was not sure if it was the same as the blunger that Vick would be using for producing slip as they look a bit differnt.

I think this is perhaps to 'high risk' a present idea so might just get Vicky to have a look at it herself.

Many thanks

...well yes, and in the olden days, guys used to tread barefeet in the muck (I mean clay) until it was soft and smooth... have you tried that? :mf:
