*1 Place Left!*
Owing to a cancellation, we have one place left!

Stalls 6ft by 6ft £25.00 (including electricity hook up if needed)
Refreshments are free for stallholders, there are toilets etc.
Disabled Access

Cheddar is a lovely village, very popular with tourists through out the year, and a great venue for craft fairs! This weekend is the May Bank Holiday weekend so we hope trade will be brisk!

This is our very first Craft Fair, and we hope it'll be a huge success. Stalls are £25.00 which includes electricity, and free tea & coffee etc for stallholders! We are not aiming to making any money from the stalls this time around - we aim to spend every spare penny on good avertising! EVERYONE needs to know this Craft Fair is on, and it's the place to be!

QUESTIONS? Please PM me or email julesapple@aol.com for an information pack which will be available shortly. Please head your email CRAFT FAIR, so it doesn't go into my spam!

Just to let everyone know that packs are available now.

They can be virtual or physical, depending on whether you choose to supply an email or snailmail (postal) address. Virtual forms need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open them.

Please email me at julesapple@aol.com if you require either, heading your email Craft Fair, describing your craft and enclosing your address.

It still needs a wee bit of tweaking, but all the relevant info is there! Designed it myself, so I'm pleased with myself as web design is a new thing to me and I'm not techy!

.......very much! I really hope it's successful.

So far, organising has been great fun and I've learnt loads. It brings out the control freak in me.....

Yesterday the people at Aceville Publications emailed to offer us a year's magazine subscription as a raffle prize! It'll be for magazines such as Crafts Beautiful...cool huh?

Info packs are going out over the internet and through snailmail at a rate of knots, so if anyone wants a stall you'll need to be quick!

Jules

PS I used to live in your neck of the woods...well, almost. Up near Kirkintilloch.

We have our full quota of jewellers, soft furnishings/ homewear, and cardmakers!

Spaces are filling up fast and it's really exciting! Thank you very much to everyone who's expressed their interest so far. If there isn't space for you at Cheddar, you may want to think about doing one or both days at our Taunton event. It's starting to look really good now and info packs will be available as soon as we have confirmed a few final details.

Still spaces left at Cheddar if you don't fall into the categories above!

Thanks! :D

Good luck.:)

...This weekend I'm pulling out all my stuff. I'm going to spread everything out on the big table and decide what to take for my stall. I've got loads of new stuff to add to my existing stock too. Bought new pale blue paper bags etc.

And I think I'll make a new table cloth so everything matches and looks co-ordinated.

Sadly, yesterday, we had a cancellation. The crafter's personal circumstances have changed and she can no longer attend.

So, we now have one central aisle place up for grabs! As it's a central table, there isn't any electricity supply to them, or walls behind them. We do still have our full quota of jewellers, knitters, bagmakers & cardmakers though.

I would very much like to re-let these places so that I can then refund the crafter's money to her - £25 is a lot to lose.

...so, no pressure there then!

I am terrified. No joke, I am. If all this goes pearshaped my head's on the block...

Last night we carried out covert operations, and put up all on roadside signs under cover of darkness. Don't ask why, I think Himself has watched far too many SAS movies....There is a huge car boot held in Cheddar on Sundays, so the thousands of people going there will see our signs today. The signs are on every majoe route into Cheddar and the surrounding villages etc.

Tomorrow we're going out to put up laminated posters in local shops and businesses, and leave leaflets with Tourist Information. It's in all the craft, art & fabric shops in Weston too.

We've put ads in seven newspapers and on Orchard FM radio. We've listed it on HTV & BBC websites, and asked both the press & TV if they'd like to come and see us. No idea if anyone will.

It's supposed to be listed in Crafts Beautiful, as they have given us a free year's subscription as a raffle prize! All proceeds from the raffle & tombola are going to St Andrew's Church House.

It's on every concievable website from craft sites to tourist info type sites and anything else in between. It's listed on every possible community board & local supermarket notice board.

On the day we will have three huge banners and a large 'A' board sign on the Hall and along the main road.

I think we have everything covered.......oh yes, and the weather is forecast to be warm and dry, but not so warm that everyone will sod off to the beach!

Can you think of anything else?

I'm with Lily With Love at the moment any one got better ideas please help. Haven,t got much stock was going to get some together today but everything has gone wrong. I'm really not to good with this getting organized thing. I'm not sure what i'm gonna need other than my stock. I did some fairs a couple of years ago but that was just for fun, I really need this to work now it's my job. What does everyone else take with them. Please help!

Apple Tree Crafts

Ok....breathe!

1. Sort out your stock, decide what you want to bring.

2. Don't panic about table cloths. Use a double flat sheet if you have one. Better to concentrate on your stock than worry about cloths.

3. Float; You'll need loose change in a box, or bumbag.

4. Price all your stock BEFORE you get there. Don't under price yourself, unless you really don't think an item will sell.

5. Pen & Notepad...for orders, or to write down what you sell. Keeping track of what items sell well helps you plan for the next fair you do!

6. Handy things, like scissors, safety pins etc. You just never know...

7. Lunch...tea & coffee & muffins etc are free at Cheddar, but you might need a snack too.

8. Leaflets or business cards if you have them. Pop them in bags with sold items, or just hand them out to people.

9. Bags; you need to pack your items when sold. Bring tissue or bubblewrap (free from fruit boxes in supermarkets) for fragile items. Print out some promotional stickers to go on bags etc.

10. Something to do in quiet periods (hopefully we won't have any....)

11. Your smile :) ......relax and enjoy yourself. Customers love a happy face!

Apple Tree Crafts

...it's going to be expensive. I'm glad most people don't take credit cards!;)

What've we got? This is off the top of my head as the list is downstairs;

Dichroic Glass, Soft Furnishings, Cards, Painted Glass, Homewear, Woodcrafts, Storybooks, Silversmith, Ethnic Jewellery Bags & Belts, Mobiles, Crystal Jewellery, Wirework, Photograhy, Art on Canvas, Stationery & Covered Boxes, Smocking, Pottery, Pet Portraits, Mosaics, Beaded Jewellery, Bags & Toys, Knitted Bags, Weaving& Felt Textiles.

And quite a few mixed stalls too. Hopefully the chap who makes miniature books in 1/12th & 1/24 scale will be coming too.

It's going to look really colourful and there'll be loads to see. It's a good job Himself will be on hand to curb my spending.....!

I was panicking about stock, but I've dug everything out, and it's better than I thought. Going to spend Friday baking fresh double choc chip and mint choc chip muffins, maybe flapjack too....and anything else I can think of that isn't too messy to eat!

My Ma will be helping too...not seen her for almost a year so looking forward to collecting her tomorrow. On our way to Mum's we're calling in at Sudeley...trying to decide what to wear....! I'm taking some felt appliques to sew in the car too....don't want to waste the time!

...we'll get your other half helping Himself with the refreshments. Then, when they're distracted.....whip out our purses and buy everything!

I'm getting really nervous. I have worries about everyone turning up with different stuff than they've told me about, or mass-produced imports that they haven't told me about......it keeps me awake at nights. I can't help thinking about just what could go wrong.

Look out for fireworks if I spot imported stuff.....I know that there is one stall which is, technically, imports. The stuff is made by the stallholder's family abroad and she finishes it off and sells it. I've salved my conscience on this one by knowing that she comes from a poor family and that the extra money really does help her family. I've seen the proof, so I'm happy (ish) with her credentials.

Not too well. Despite all our advertising we saw hardly anyone and those who did come in weren't willing to spend

I feel personally responsible for everyone's paltry sales (mine were poor too!) but I hope that every one enjoyed meeting each other.....the atmosphere was wonderful. I enjoyed meeting everyone and I really do hope that today hasn't put anyone off doing our other fairs. I think that Stow on the Wold will be much better as our hall there is right in the middle of the town.

We learnt a lot today. In future we won't be spending shedloads on the media. Signs on lamp-posts etc are far more useful and get seen by many more people! You live and learn.....;)

I managed to sell £10, but my youngest spent £3 on the tombola and won back the prize we donated....:p

I'm shattered, but my poor husband is absolutely whacked. Not only did he put out (and put away) all the furniture, but he spend all day supplying everyone with refreshments! He's a good boy....

Ohhhh, I'm sorry to hear that, I was thinking of you all today and thought you'd be having a great time - which I'm sure you did really despite poor turnout.
I agree that lampost signs are a great way of advertising, there was one in our village that had signs on practically every lampost (is that all one word really - too much wine already!) and you couldn't not know it was on. I went along as a customer and it was soooo busy I just nipped in for some chocolate fountain yuck and then straight back out again - there is a fine balance between too few & too many punters!
Better luck next time!
Anne.

Hiya:)

Just wanted to say that I was at the Craft Fair at Cheddar today - and yes there was a definate lack of people through the door but that happens even with the best advertising.

I attended one last week and signs were on every lamp post and at every roundabout approaching the village in every direction - the event was also organised by someone who has been doing this for years - I did not even cover my table whereas today I did. You really can't ever say what brings people in.

My husband did wander up to the village of Cheddar and spoke to a few shopkeepers and they all said that the village had be unusually quiet for the past couple of week - they did not know why!!

All I'm saying is - don't beat yourself up over it - I have a wonderful day... had a good laugh with Kate (Katian Kraft) and Jo (Higglety Piggiety) and made some really useful contacts with details of other events we are doing and where to find out information etc.

Sometimes it's not just the selling that makes it a good day.

Sounds like you had a great time but in need of a few more people..

Might be worth writing a list of all the good and bad points.. What worked and what didn't whilst its fresh in your mind.. And keep reviewing the list..

The variables in regards to fairs are massive.. Is a sunday a better day ? How hot is it... When speaking to people, when its hot people don't buy also when its cold..

The other thing imho is making something regular e.g. same time, same place every year / 6month / month etc..

Sign posts are massive when to inform people of fairs along with local papers..

Apple Tree Crafts
06-05-2007, 09:07 AM
.....there aren't any other regular features in Cheddar for crafts - just a Flea Market and a Farmer's Market, both small.

The venue is the only venue in Cheddar, and apart from lamposts, we thought it was well publicised etc.

Sunday may well have brought more people through the door as they passed on the way to or from the huge carboot sale just along the road, but most people going to the car boot just want a bargain. And, as it's a church hall, we would have clashed with the Sunday services and had no car park.

Talking of carparks, most crafters left their cars in the very small hall car park, and didn't move them to Budgens as requested, so that there was hardly any space for customers to park. Although it was in the T&C's, I should have reminded people, but I was very busy, so that was my fault really.

Another problem was that we forgot the nametags for the tables...and although most people asked where their table was, after I'd shown a few people where they were, they then moved. This caused chaos, which took a lot of smoothing over. Next time, I'm just going to be firm, however much setting up they've done, and tell them to move back.

The floor plans supplied by the hall secretary were incorrect in the siting of sockets, of which there were very few. We knew there weren't many but it turned out that there were only 3 in the big hall....madness ensued.

Thankfully, for Stow, we know exactly where the sockets are, and there are loads all in handy places! The hall is right in the centre of town, and it's a very wealthy area. However, my lottery tickets haven't done their job, so I won't be moving to one of those gorgeous Cotswold villages!

Mostly, I think we did everything right, but we have learned a lot. Hopefully this bodes well for the future. I think we are still going to book Cheddar for Christmas, but all the mistakes from yesterday will not happen again.

Jules

Ah Jules that's such a shame. In the past year of doing fairs I've learnt that you can just never tell with the public. Yesterday was a learning curve for you, like you say and I know it wasn't anything you did or didn't do. I did Wells over Easter thinking it would be huge and I sold 5 pairs of earrings on the first day and went home that night even though I'd paid for 2 days. All the crafters were saying the same "you just never can tell"

It makes me feel even worse because I had an absolutely fantastic day yesterday at Downton Cuckoo Fair - I sold half my stock and took record takings. Sometimes it was 5 people deep. I'm sorry if that sounds like I'm pouring salt into the wound - I got lucky. This time.

I'm really looking forward to doing Stow and all the others with you.

Hope it doesn't spoil the rest of the weekend

Well I enjoyed myself anyway!

Whilst it wasn't rammed there were a fair number of people so not a complete disaster! I did pretty well considering.

I wish i could've spent more time talking to everyone but my OH kept wandering off and leaving me with my stall! Useless!

Jules, i'm so glad she likes it! It was one of my personal faves too! Awwww, young love!

Wish i was coming to Stow cuz even if it's LESS busy (which i'm sure it wont be) It'll be a damn site busier and more fun than the one i'm doing! doh!

Keep it up Jules! It wasn't nearly as bad as you seem to think it was!

Two friends' groups, who visited us to have a look at the fair, mentioned that they had problems with finding the venue and so I really think the ramp-posts ads will be effective especially because the church was located in a bit out of the town.

How is it going with Bradford-on-Avon (advertising & the number of crafters), Jules? I know you are busy with Stow and Sudeley but please remember advertising B-o-A too!:p

Stow seems the better location and I hope the weather will be good! I'll be away then so I cannot go and have a look.
Good luck!

I do have high hopes for Stow.

We can't do lamppost advertising there, as it will be taken down immediately and we risk being banned from the venue, which we have also booked for October too!

However, St Edward's Hall is right in the middle of Stow, surrounded by all the shops, like an island. We are going to hang our banners out of the windows, and as we are on the first floor, they will be seen the length & breadth of the shopping area.

We've already advertised in the few shops that were prepared to put posters up for us, and we'll advertise in the local papers too.

We have about 5 spaces left, providing no one cancels, so I hope that they will be filled shortly. Roll up, roll up.....!

Hey Jules - when are you taking bookings for the October date in Stow and when is it? My hand's up as I've got nothing booked for October.

...is Saturday October 20th.

Not sure whether to promote this as pre-Christmas or just Autumn, but I suspect that by then people will be looking for Christmas gifts.

We're pencilled in for Cheddar again on November 17th for a Christmas Fair, and despite Saturday's disappointment, I think it will do well. People are more committed to spending money for gifts etc by then.

Only got home this evening from Wilts so it's my first chance to check the forum. I pesonally had a great time at Cheddr - no, I didn't sell anything (although that's not unusual for me!) but I loved meeting everyone and had a great laugh!!! Don't think I've laughed so hard in ages (neither has my mum!). Hammo - where were you and what craft do you do? So sorry I didn't come up and say hi but didn't relaise you were there! Think I met everyone else???

Really looking forward to Stow. I have also decided to reduce my prices a little and have 'show only prices' in hope that will boost sales. I did Grittleton today and made 3 sales, but had a lot of interest which resulted in no sales. Some seemed put off by prices (I believe that crafts are only truely appreciated by fellow crafters) so I think I will try that angle and see if that helps.

I agree that nearer xmas Cheddar will do a lot better Jules. Such a shame you couldn't sign post it from Chedder itself though. Mean Mr LB!!!!!

Anyway, hope I didn't annoy anyone with my laughter and looking forward to meeting you all (and more of you!) again at the next one!!!) Kate :)

Even though the public deigned not to turn up (their loss!) I think it all looked brilliant. Gary took photos but these three are the only ones clear enough!

Katian Krafts,

Our stall was at the little corner... I'm the Japanese jeweller with a linocut prints' artist!

When I went to have a look at your stall, you weren't there so I could not introduce myself.
Maybe you were having a break or looking at the other stalls?:p

I tried to post the photos of our stall here but this site doesn't let me do that until I post more than 25.

Please have a look at 'London Crafts Girls' for the picures that have taken in the fair if interested!

...It's just one big room at Stow, so we'll all be able to see each other and wander about. I didn't get much chance last Saturday to really look at everyone's great crafts. I'm going to make time at Stow, if we aren't hugely busy that is.....;)
