View Full Version : self-serve potpourri??

This is my new "big idea" ... I have so many dried flowers and herbs from my garden, and apple, lemon, lime and orange slices (store bought fruit but from Texas, so sorta "homegrown"), my own juniper berries, rose hips (not too great looking), roses and petals (pink), juniper frond tips, my own pine cones (a bit large)...and then other things I bought that are certified organic...and I have about 6 different "flavors" of fixative sealed in pint mason jars...so I thought, in order to make my table look better, I would put it all out in little boxes and let people decide whwat they want in their potpourri! Whatcha think, hmmm??
I probably should do the "serving" myself as all the dried flowers are somewhat fragile...
I could have some shelves behind my table with my upscaled cigar boxes, and the little bins of dried stuff in front...then I have a wire display ($1.00 at a store closing!!) for my felted soap...read that update in the soap section...
Maybe I could make the "bins" out of cracker boxes, decoupaged with colored tissue paper and crinkled up a bit for texture...
Now...maybe pour out the heavily scented fixative (it's the corncob pellets called Fiber Fixative, an unfortunate sounding title IMO) into my little cotton muslin drawstring bags - a stupid purchase, but live and learn...
And then what...charge by weight?
So, half the table dedicated to potpourri and candles...

Handmade smellies, how lovely :)
TBH, I would be tempted to have at least some of it premixed in big bowls. I have would be worried and mixing a toxic blend of stuff if I had to choose, I would rather choose a lovely handmade premixed one.

none of the dried flowers and fruits would be scented...the fiber fixative would have the FO in it, and be in closed jars, for them to choose from. I was thinking I'd have sniffy cards out rather than open the jars repeatedly.
I am having second thoughts now...maybe my dried things would get too dusty or crumbled if out at every market we go to...maybe just have an open box of potpourri out that would be pretty and smell nice...lend ambiance...
So, when I cleared out my parents house a year and a half ago, there was this drawstring bag of rose scented sachet for a drawer or to hang in a closet...I swear, my mother had had it at least 20 years, and it still smelled quite strong. The other day when I was packing up stuff to ship to my idiot sister (sorry) I decided to keep the sachet and open it up...which I did today.
It's a pretty cream colored bag, tied with taupe lace and a cream colored cord...
Inside was a cotton muslin pouch yellowed with age and/or FO...so I cut the knot and opened it up...it was simply cedar curls that, after all this time, still smelled VERY strongly of roses. Now, cedar curls are dirt cheap. The cotton muslin inner bag is cheap, too...so the manufacturer really only spent any money on the outer bag...and my mother had gotten this at Neiman Marcus...paid a pretty penny for it, I'm sure!
I just wonder how much FO they soaked the cedar curls in...
Anyhoo...now I am thinking i will do that, as i have 4 lbs of cedar chips, a box load of cotton muslin drawstring bags...and tons of various FOs. All i need to do is make some outer bags and get some pretty cord or ribbon - wait - i actually have several unopened spools of grosgrain ribbon in various colors...

Great ideas!
How about using the same idea (cedar curls) and making padded scented clothes hangers too, with pretty fabric?
If you want to expand even more, wheat bags to heat in the microwave are quite easy and cheap to make, you can use either wheat or rice in them. Im not sure whether fragrance oils are ok though, or if it should be essential oils.
I love the idea of self serve pot pourri, you could do with the jars that pick and mix sweets are in to sell it, then just a bit of it would be exposed when they opened the lid at the bottom to get some. I have seen pot pourri being sold "self-serve" in a local garden centre, although not in quite the same way - it is already mixed, fragranced etc so basically all you are choosing is how much of it you have. So your idea is even better!

I love your idea. I personally wouldn't consider buying pot pouri but I think your set up would have me too curious. I am sure I would give in and come away with some.
Good Luck!

The coathangers...hmmm...there's a good idea....
Ahhhh, flowerpots might be a good way to display the potpourri ingredients....

I think that sounds a great idea. You could keep all your scents separate but have some small sample mixes made up for people to sniff. Then only mix as they are bought. That way people will know what say, lavender and rosmary or lavender and rose smells like but if one is more popular you won't get left with too much already mixed.
I think plain cream or beige bags with coloured ribbon sounds great, and it would look more earthy/natural.
Or maybe get some organza bags and put the chosen pot pourri in and then pull both strings to one side and knot them so it is permanently closed.

A local garden shop is going to carry my potpourri! It won't be self serve...just bagged...so must get on to finding attractive cello bags...
