Hi All,

I am off to Japan this xmas and want to buy a camera before I go (maybe when I am there) and have no idea about cameras.

I am looking to do some trecking and will be photographing the outdoors.

Any advice appreciated.

I think I would opt for a high end compact for this job. My favourite camera is a Nikon D40 SLR but I don't know that I would trust it to be rugged enough for serious travelling especially if you are going to get out and about a lot. A compact is not as cumbersome and will be easier to have around you all the time.

I have a Samsung which is a teriffic camera but there are plenty to choose from. If you look on cnet.co.uk you will find really down to earth reviews. All the top models will have excellent video presentations which will take you through all the cameras best and worst points.

I may be teaching my granny to suck eggs but don't forget to take one or two spare batteries and a few 32 gig SD cards. So easy to snap away ad lib and forget about power and card space.

Good luck and have a great trip

Thanks for the advice, yes been on CNET really good reveiws.

Been looking at minolta and Nikon. Compact is what I want really as I am not a very serious photographer I just like taking photos.

Thanks for the help.

Try having a look at the panasonic lumix range. They're a step up from a point and shoot without getting into the whole dslr thing.

George is absolutely correct. the Lumix range are the best kept secret of the compact cameras.
I own two professional DSLR's for work but for just having a camera at all times when out and about I use a Panasonic Lumix FZ38.

I have a 10.2 Mega Pixel Nikon SLR camera and an old 4,0 Canon. When just taking regular pictures I can use both and get very good pictures. But when you want bigger pictures you need more MP. I have enlarged many pictures taken with my 4.0 MP camera, and they are very good actually. And that camera is about 5 years old.

Also steves digicams. don't forget to look at the Canon powershot range, though the Lumix's are good.

I bought a Canon IXUS 9515 from Jessops. Cost about £120. It is the best camera I have had. The wide and macro shots are really good. MKacro is super sharp. A couple of examples if you are interested:

It is really easy to use. Only minus point would be that the battery runs out a little fast but that is perhaps because of the large screen.

I bought a Canon Ixus 970 last spring and love it. I wanted something pocket sized for work and to be able to keep in my bag. I was forever missing photo opportunities because I have an EOS 400D which is great for when I am out with the purpose of taking photos but rather cumbersome when out shopping or working.

I suggest that you look in the shops first and see what you like the look of. Look online for the specs and best prices.

I have used NIKON D40 (SLR).
Light, compact and easy to use.
My dad using D80 and that's good, too.

I'm not from NIKON, just in case :D
