View Full Version : What do you use to label your work?

Okay so i have started making vintage inspired handbags recently, and I really would like a way to personalise them, so that people know it is a bag handmade by me.
I thought about putting my own labels in them. So I got some narrow fabric tape and was going to write my name on them and sew a small piece of the fabric tape into it. But it doesn't look as professional as I'd hoped.
So how do you guys label your work? Do you make the labels yourself on the computer or do you go through a company? I would really like to know more about this, ideally with minimum expense.
Thanks!

I would love labels with my own logo woven in... but for now I have embroidered my own for big items ( I have an embroidery machine and embroidery design software ) but for low priced and small items I bought some low cost "school name" labels... Can't remember who they were by... just do do a search in Google...
Check out the pic below and see what they look like on our items... I often use them folded in half on a seam...

I use my computer to print on special fabric, then cut up into labels, then put on fray proofing stuff and then iron on with wondaweb stuff. Works a treat and looks pretty professional too! Will look for link with instructions for you.

I use a commercial firm who make woven tapes for crafters, they have a choice of colours and are very reasonable

I sew mine inside my bags so they have profesional finish but don't spoil the overall shape and lines of my bags.

I print my own card and fabric labels on the computer and add to my work, doping it myself I feel I have more control over the content also can print off as I need, not have to buy larger quantities and multiple sizes.

Being a skinflint (and design control/tweaking freak) I print mine on card on my computer. I've found somethings out. Cheap inks don't look as intense as the expensive ones. Computer ink runs in the rain. I got a laminator for my birthday and it's solved the problem brilliantly....for display purposes. I take the ticket off and put an ordinary card in the bag when I sell something. (Then I reuse the ticket, tee, hee.)

(but Annie can not read and neither can her customers so her stuff is sold with no tickets. You have to ask the price and get engaged in a conversation :p. Then you get berated if you forgot to bring a basket to market .......or councilled to beat your servant for forgetting :D ) Wicked!

I started off handwriting mine, but they were a nightmare! Now print them on the PC.

I bought some (30) from a trader on etsy who makes them. I have to say they are nice little labels and she designed them for me too. If you search for monkey graphics on etsy I'm sure you will find her! In terms of hanging labels, I was just going to attach one of my vista business cards to a hang tag to hang from things.

Wow all of you have been so helpful, I didn't realise there were so many ways of doing it!
But I think, Claire, that I will use your method. Their prices are very reasonable, though I think 36 will suffice for the moment, as I haven't even made that many bags yet lol! They look very professional, exactly what I was looking for. Now I just have to remember to sew them into the lining, knowing me I will buy them and forget lol.
Thanks a bunch!

I wanted to post a reply but you've all seemed to have worked it out already. I would just add though, that I too would recommend laminating your tags as they look very professional and stay looking good, even if the item for sale has been waiting around for that discerning buyer for a while!
I would also recommend kountry expressions (need to type into google - they are on page one) Lisa is a stay at home Mum who's business is creating gorgeous labels, business cards note books etc. The prices are good and she gives a good service.

I also buy my labels online, they are like school labels (that get sewn into jumpers!). Made from cotton and threaded with my brand.
I sew them inside my bags or wherever they look best-sometimes on the strap too.
I also have wooden price tags with my logo, and am looking into a way to brand all my bags with the same accessory on. (Thinking along the lines of designer bags like radley and fendi who have branding on all their products.)
Have a think to where most of your inspiration comes from, if you can get something unique it will help get your designs noticed. Well, that's what i'm hoping anyway!!!xx Have fun xx
