Anyone got a good "plain-keeping-cake" recipe?

It's me and this birthday cake again... I need to find a good sponge-type cake recipe that'll make two 12" squares that'll stand up to layering and being made a couple of days before. Does anyone here have a good recipe?

I'd ask Mum for her standard "keeping-decorating-birthday-cake" recipe, but we're not telling her about the party...

Can't someone sneak into her house to "steal" it? I'm afraid I don't have a recipe that would suit your requirements.

this recipe fills 12" square pans and says it keeps for a week if stored right ( which I suppose means in an airtight container wrapped in greaseproof)
